Good luck to those "about to be Rats" who are wending your way toward Lexington this week. Keep your head down, remember they will neither kill you nor eat you  and that the secret to success is just to carry on, keep an eye out on how your Brother Rats are doing, and internalize the honor code. It will go by faster than you think.Moms, Dads: once they march off- don't stand around the gate to barracks trying to see in- it's just depressing for all of you! They will get a short call home sometime next week when they meet their faculty advisor.

If Parents want to be there for a very nicely done event- the New Cadet Oath and parade thru New Market will be worth going to in a couple of weeks, and of course please go to Parents Weekend (for which I hope that you have already reserved your hotel rooms!)

Good luck to all of you!

Thought we knew everthing about getting kids ready for school having had my two oldest already complete their BS's, but getting my son ready for VMI is completely different. Things as simple as paying for his books for class, my daughter simply had me go to the book store with them and pay on the spot. My son I need to get money into a Keydet card, or have him get a credit card, or some other method. (going with Keydet card).

He thinks he has everything packed and ready, he checked his list multiple times, but as with my daughters I figure something will be missed, (more money in the card is my solution)

Good Luck to All!!! Just glad that I have to help haul that stuff up ONLY one flight of stairs this year. I can't believe how fast it is going.

For the future rats lurking,

I wish you the best of luck and may matriculation week pass by with relative ease.

As the proud Mom of a 2nd, I think about Matriculation Day when my DS got marched out of the building and up to barracks, so proud but sad...DS is now a Color Guard Sgt and will be leading this years Rats to the start of their journey. I remember him calling the first few days and thinking things were going okay-glad to be sitting on a bench with a cushion and bottle to water, 2nd call was crying into the phone and on it went. Advice? Get a local host family that can give a reprieve-a hot meal, even for a few hours. Hear them but don't 'rescue' them...you may be surprised by what comes out in the end (even tho they still won't clean their rooms when home LOL)

Matriculation yesterday...

From 7am AROTC briefing to 3pm Rat march off, it was an awesome day. There is no doubt VMI is "no ordinary college."

Matriculation Week

How do you prepare yourself for matriculation day at VMI? Besides the physical part? Thanks, Cynthia

In Lexington last Weekend

Saw lot's of sharp looking cadets and parents walking the town over last weekend seemingly enjoying their "town liberty"....I was moving my DD into her freshmen dorm at W&L Friday/Saturday/Sunday....not an easy assignment compared to 2008 when I dropped my DS off in front of Alumni Hall at USNA on I-DAY....that soon-to-be plebe basically carried everything he needed on his back....DD moving into her W&L dorm practically broke my back (not to mention my wallet) with many, many and many more armloads of "necessities" !

BTW : Sunday morning while drinking a cup at Cool Beans café a USMC O-6 came in for a cup to go ( driving a spit-shined classic red Ford F150 ).....would he be the 'Dant ?

GO NAVY !
