what is the basic SAT/ACT test scores that will allow a person to open an application for the academy?
Thanks I will keep that in mind.If you peruse these forums you'll see that there are a lot of candidates with ACT scores above 30 (on all sections) and SAT scores at or above 700 (Math/Reading). But there are a lot of factors besides your SAT and ACT scores in play. If you look recent class profiles, you'll see a good portion of the classes had ACT/SAT scores lower than those above.
Since appointment to a SA is a balance between academics, athletics, and leadership there are always appointees with lower scores. There are also appointees from under-represented ethnic backgrounds and whom are recruited athletes. That said, if your strongest asset is academics, you will need to shoot for the highest scores you can get so take the tests as many times as possible and prepare ahead of time.
For what it's worth, our DS received an appointment with a pair of 26's. He was not a recruited athlete, but was involved in a lot of sports & band & also had a lot of proven leadership.

I was accepted with a 580 CR, 650 writing, 710 math..but it is not just SAT scores. It is really everything else as well, trust me. Make sure you are well rounded with athletics, extra-curriculars, and leadership opportunities.
Do you know if your DS was a principle for your MOC? Any idea how competitive your DS' Congressional district was?
I asked these questions because getting an appointment is not a simple formula of scoring X of SATs, so many leadership experience, and so many sports. As far as I know once a candidate maxes out leadership/sports point, there is no extra credit.
None of our MOC choose a principle. They all submit the max number of candidates and let the USNA sort them out.
I don't have specifics on how competitive our district is however 3 students out of our district are now Plebes at USNA. Coincidentally, all 3 also had the same BGO.
Hardly a coincidence. A BGO has "regional" responsibilities so this is exactly what I would expect for appointees who come from the same district.
