Does the USCG follow the Dodmerb steps or do they evaluate differently. If so,when does it come up on the application? Also,if deemed qualified for the other academies thru Dodmerb does that mean you qualified for USCG?

The USCGA does follow DoDMERB standards. In theory, if you are qualified for other service academies, you are qualified medically for the USCG and the USCGA. You only need one examination for all of the service academies, so you will only need to submit your medical paperwork when they ask for it. The Medical exam is completed after the application process is complete. If you require a waiver, individual academies will consider the situation differently. One may grant you a waiver, while one will not approve one. Good luck!

Not Necessarily true. As a maritime service the USCG has more stringent requirements for its officer based on Color Blindness and the like than say the Army.

I don't think that is the case. My son was fully qualified for AFA but had to get a waiver for CGA (which he did).

It was not a color blind issue, but rather the near sighted standards which are different.

My daughter is also learning this the hard way as she tries to get into Merchant Marine and is worried about the different eye standards

I think most of your questions have been answered. USCGA does use DODMERB. It does have slightly different requirements from the DODMERB exam. In other words, one DODMERB is sufficient for all the Academies use, but they may have different requirements of it. Also, at least for USCGA, you will not receive authorization to get a DODMERB exam unless and until you have been determined to be a qualified candidate based on your completed application.

I wish Objee would step in here and verify this.

The information is on the USCGA admissions web site. The relevant section is below. I've underlined and bolded particularly relevant information. I hope this helps.

Begin Quote:

The Department of Defense Medical Examination Review Board (DoDMERB) determines the medical fitness of all applicants to the five United States federal service academies. The names of applicants deemed competitive for an appointment to the Coast Guard Academy (or one of our preparatory school programs) will be provided to DoDMERB once they have completed the application process. Within two weeks, you will receive instructions from DoDMERB (or their contractor Concorde, Inc.) about how to schedule your medical examination.
Do not delay. Schedule your physical exam immediately upon receipt of your scheduling information. If your initial medical exam is not completed by April 15, or if you are not found qualified by June 1, your application may be withdrawn from further consideration.

You do not need to take a second medical exam if you have already taken one for another service academy or ROTC scholarship program. The medical exam is valid for two years, but you must submit a statement of present health and report any injuries which occurred since the medical exam date.

End Quote

Note that the information DOES NOT state that if applicant deemed qualified for one academy that the applicant is qualified for all. It is only the examination that is valid across academies on ROTC programs. Qualification criteria among academies and programs can and do vary.

Read your Applicant Handbook.

Your answers are basically correct, but complete applicants need to be found "academically competitive" for an appointment prior to being scheduled for their DoDMERB medical exam for CGA.
