I just completed my first APFT this morning and didn't do so hot. I got 12:50 minutes on the run which was terrific but the sit-ups and push-ups weren't good. I did 47 sit-ups (I am in shock why I did so bad) and I got 40 push-ups. I am a sophomore in college and taking both MS 101 and MS 201 classes. I basically only have this year to show myself to the cadres so that they will want to contract me. My question is basically: Am I screwed? Do most people do this bad? Two freshmen I am friends with got 55-60 on the push-ups and 65-70 on the sit-ups.

Oh I am 20 and male and in the Army ROTC.

No, your not screwed...yet.

You now know what you need to work on. Realize that going to PT by itself will not improve your score, you need to work on your own. I'm sure your school has a Rec Center, start working with free weights. Find some other students to go to the gym with and start a good workout regiment. Seek help on what type of work out will help you improve your PU's and SU's.

Your not that bad off, it's a lot harder to bring a run time down then it is to increase your PU's and SU's. You need to start working on it now and keep up a routine, no slacking off.

Show continued improvement and you should be fine.

When is your next APFT, I would encourage you to really hit it hard now so you at least pass the next one.

It's not unusual, you just lack upper body strength. Start hitting the gym and you will be fine for the next APFT.

I agree with others, but keep in mind you have to work hard and consistently or it will never come to pass. It takes three attributes to succeed. Determination, determination, and determination.

Find a workout buddy or two to help stay motivated on those days you just don't feel like it, it will help more than you think.

Good luck, work hard.

The Next APFT is October 8th so basically one month from now. We have 3 each semester

My son (now an MS3) struggled terribly his first semester freshman year with passing due to his push-up technique. He was toward the top end on run and sit-ups. It wasn't strength or lack of preparation, just technique. He finally passed later in the semester allowing him to contract and have his scholarship kick in.

Now he is comfortably passing and is approaching max across the board.

The cadre and other cadets worked with him and once he was over the hump all was well.
