Dean of admissions call

If he or she left a number be sure to call back.

If s/he asks about my son, please tell them that they waited too long...he decided to go to USAFA instead.

Thanks for the insight. I will update you tomorrow. Congrats on your sons Usafa decision:confused:

When my DD was in the application process the Dean of Adm called and asked for a chance to meet with her at our home. He was very cordial and reiterated the benefits and opportunities that the NA offered. It was essentially a recruiting visit (not athletic recruiting) trying to influence DD's outlook of the NA. He said that he was visiting only a few other candidates in the NE so we took it as a positive sign.

The Dean of Admissions wanted to meet your daughter AT YOUR HOME? Where do you live?

It was a couple of years ago (Class of 2015).
Good luck to you and your son! :thumb:

Wow... that is wonderful. My son has applied to both USAFA and USNA. We will see if he gets into either. Son will try to call admissions today. We shall see....

The verdict is in

The Dean called today and said the LOA is in the mail. DS is excited, but I have tried to temper that by reminding him that a NOMINATION is required. All his nomination paper work is in except letters of recommendation. This forum has been so helpful in educating me on how to keep things in perspective. Me being the conservative "trust but verify" auditor that I am. I wont get remotely excited until I see the letter in hand.

The MOCs are usually "copied" to the LOA. They will be getting this information and it boosts the likelihood of gaining a nomination tremendously. However, I would recommend making a copy of the LOA and sending it your MOC yourself, just to make sure they are aware of it. It's like having a "letter of recommendation" from the United States Naval Academy, itself!

It begs the question, "Why wouldn't you think I'm good enough for USNA if USNA, itself, is saying that I'm good enough?"

Agree with Memphis - send them a copy. When my DD was going through nomination interviews Sen #1 called to say he was going to nom her. That combined with LOA secured appointment. Sen #2 called a few days later to congratulate her on getting Sen #1 nom and inquire why she didn't put other academies on her form - "What happens if the NA doesn't offer appointment?" When she explained that she had a LOA his reply was "Congratulations. Have a great career in the Navy." So the reality is that Sen #2 did not know - or notice - the LOA.

All that said, the usual advice is to not mention the LOA during the interview, perhaps bringing it up only at the very end if the interviewers do not mention it. Approach the interview as if it did not exist least the panel get the feeling of arrogance.

Thanks Memphis9489 and OSDAD. I will scan the letter in and forward it to the points of contact at the MOC's office (mine prefer electronic communications at this point) and encourage DS to walk a tight rope around the subject. We'll keep hard copie on hand as well.

Here's why I would mail them a copy of your LOA even though the academy sends them a copy.

If it comes from the Naval Academy, the letter may not make into your personal file. It may get filed somewhere else and not get noticed. If it is sent from YOU, it will go in your file.

With one of our MOCs, when my sons came in for an interview (already with an LOA), they were aware of it. The interview lasted about 2 minutes, consisting mostly of one question, "If you are nominated for Naval Academy, do you intend on accepting a subsequent appointment?" I'm not sure if the other MOCs were aware of it because it never came up during the interview.

Letter is in Hand

The LOA is in hand. Copies have been made and sent to each of his Congressional Reps.

Thanks again for the advice.

If I may ask, what was the time frame from when your DS had his completed application into the academy and received his LOA? Also, was he a recruited athlete?

He submitted all of HIS application paperwork in mid July. The BGO write up was completed 7/22. The final teachers' letter of recommendation went in on September 3rd. His LOA is dated 9/13/2013. The phone call came on the 17 or 18. He plays Varsity football and lacrosse but he is DEFINITELY NOT a recruited athlete
