Army Tattoo Grooming Standards Rules Approved

Ouch. That picture proves how dangerous drinking can be!! And for me too many beers after Giants game.

Were you crying in your beer? Or celebrating? Folks here in NC were celebrating. :rolleyes:

We don't enforce weight standards. We sure as hell aren't going after tattoos anytime soon.

Stick with those Hannah Tatoos only

Not to change the subject, I found the following from the article more interesting

Once the rules are implemented, soldiers will sit down with their unit leaders and “self identify” each tattoo. Soldiers will be required to pay for the removal of any tattoo that violates the policy, Chandler said.

Wonder what "self identify" means?

On a separate note, Chandler told troops that the new Army combat uniforms will likely be phased in starting eight to nine months from now. The uniform will feature different colors for different environments, but the pattern will be very similar to the mottled “multicam” currently used in Afghanistan under the designation “Operation Enduring Freedom Camouflage Pattern.”

The uniform will have different coloring for varying environments like jungle and desert, he said, rather than the widely panned “universal” color of the current ACUs.

Chandler said the most expensive part of moving to the new uniforms will be the gear like backpacks, body armor, and other items that are issued to all soldiers.

Call me short sighted, but with the troop withdrawal in Afghanistan happening as we speak and "multicam" being better than ACUs in Afghanistan, should we be spending money to get our new uniforms?

I guess if we have better uniforms, don't have to worry about having less soldiers, replacing old equipment, lack of training opportunities, and etc.

In my own mind it means, "This one is my girlfriend. This one's my Mom. That one is my gang symbol.... etc. etc." :smile:

And this one is from a few days in Las Vegas, have no idea or remember what it means!

Your "own mind" comment reminds me of a soldier that transferred into my company.

A soldier in my BN had a Nazi symbol tattoo on his shoulder and it was discovered. The "self identification" was to honor his grandfather's service during WW II in the Wehrmacht. I don't know if there was any issues in his previous company, but never had any issue with him in my company.

What happens in Vegas does not always stay in Vegas!
:shake::shake::shake:

When the Marine Corps changed policies a few years ago I was the designated person to document all the female Marine tattoos. I can't tell you how many of those stories I heard! I actually had one female Marine who had some strange ones that I had to look up online to ensure they were not gang related. The Marine Corps tightened standards a few years ago, but they have always monitored them closely prior that for special assignments (drill field, embassy duty, etc), commissioning packages, etc. For Marines who applied to these programs photos of their tattoos have been a part of those applications for a long time now. I am covered in quite a few tattoos myself, but luckily they were all done sober and not in Vegas.

I am confused. I thought this already existed, or was it only for officers that this existed? I recall many posts here for SA/ROTC candidates discussing this issue, and that the rule was if the tat could not be seen wearing any type of issued items, including PT gear they were good to go.
~~~~ I thought they had to submit a pic of the tat even if it was not seen because that was both a DoDMERB and appropriate tattoo issue.
I know back in the late 90's/early 2000 (i.e.98-00) that the AF came down on the body piercing issues. A funny story that the squadron commander told us about regarding tongue piercing an Airmen had is why I recall it was in that time frame.
I also do recall that for the AF they did grandfather those in the service with tats against regs, but I would think they are all gone by now.
Two other questions regarding the removal issue.
1. Would Tri-Care pick up this bill, or at least some of it? I.E. the deductible is their only cost, not the total bill.
2. What if the E4 with 2 kids, and collecting WIC can't afford to get rid of it due to costs? How will they proceed?
~~~~ Discharge? Medical discharge?

Let's be honest, this is going to impact the enlisted a lot more than the officers from a financial impact. It may cost 200 bucks to get a tat, but to remove it will cost a lot more than a couple hundred bucks, especially if insurance will not cover it.

I read an article a few months back that discussed the number 1 medical field to get into for financial success.

Dermatology.

Dermatologists can do laser surgery, thus between skin cancer and tattoo removal the demand is very high compared to the supply.
~~~~ I also saw Mark Wahlberg in an interview discussing that he was in the process of removing his tats, and said it is incredibly painful, much more than getting a tat, and that it takes several visits to complete.
That leads me to the next question. How long do they get to remove it before it becomes an issue?
If there are problems with the removal than what? Does the military pick up the tab for the medical bill? Infections due to the laser surgery and not following the directions from the doc that removed the tat? Waivers? If they cut them loose, can the member claim disability? They forced them to remove it to stay in.
Anyone know if Obama's Affordable Care Act covers tattoo removal?
I know, I know, I am overthinking this, but these were the questions that popped into my mind as I read the article when it stated it would be at their own cost to remove the tats.
When I go to the gym on base it is literally IMPOSSIBLE to find a soldiers without sleeve or lower body tattoos. I play a game sometimes to find 5 guys without tattoos, I always lose...
This should be interesting because it seems the pressure to get tattoos in the military is extreme even some are ridiculously stupid looking. Zombified Cap'n Crunch on the knee cap....what?
Where else would you find a zombified Cap'n Crunch? The game you play reminds me of Abraham just prior to Sodom and Gomorrah. "What if there are 10 good men?". :biggrin:
