ADSO question?

I put an ADSO down for Hawaii as my first duty station. From my understanding Hawaii is a harder post to get even with ADSO. If I choose my 2nd or 3rd choice and use an ADSO instead of using it for Hawaii, how likely would I be to get one of those locations? My 2nd choice would be Fort Bragg and I would use the ADSO still. I want to use the ADSO because I plan on doing a full 20 (already prior service with time in) and I'd like my initial obligation to be 6-9 years depending if I can get one or both of the ADSOs I've submitted (branch was the other).

I wouldn't say it would be extremely hard to get HI it depends on if there is a slot there for you rank and branch. So your branch of choice could play a role in that to. What's your first branch choice and OMS?

Honestly Hawaii isn't that hard to get depending on branch and no one wants Ft. Bragg (relatively speaking)....

As I'm sure your aware, being prior service, it will all come down to allocations.

My son just graduated Flight School and is heading to Hawaii, there had not been any pilots sent to Hawaii for a while and then there were 4 from the same class, again, allocations.

Your ADSO will bump you up the list if there are any slots for your branch, if there are not then the ADSO won't be of much help.

My understanding from DS when he went through the process last year was that you only have 1 ADSO. If you don't have to use it for branch, then you can possibly use it for duty station. I say possibly because duty station even with an ADSO is not guaranteed. If you don't use it, you're not "charged" with the extra obligation.

You can submit dual ADSOs, one for branch and one for post. You are not limited to one.

I would advise you to look at past Post ADSOs in one of the accessions power points containing that data. It breaks down who asked for/got what by branch. Incurring an ADSO for Fort Bragg when you don't have to would be a shame, regardless of your present career goals.

I guess it really just boils down to how much you want to work in Hawaii. If you plan on doing 20 regardless, an ADSO to Hawaii would make sense considering that extra time will be done regardless.

Like everyone else said though, it's going to be based on slots for the branch you receive. From an Aviation perspective (my branch), you can't go to Hawaii if you fly the AH-64 since it's a light CAB and doesn't have Apaches there. Likewise, they may not have many slots of whatever branch you receive, or you may be lucky and they just had several open up.

If the location is worth it to you, I'd absolutely do it. Anyone who already knows they want to be a lifer shouldn't be as concerned with ADSOs. That just means more job security for you.
