Yes, my heart swells up with pride whenever I think about THE Virginia Military Institute. VMI has been the biggest challenge of my life thus far, and every obstacle I hurdle here is such a reward to my character. Not to mention ALL the opportunities it has given me.

Please post your questions here, so they can be answered publicly (as i'm sure there are those who have not made an account to post and may have the same questions)

VMI Majors

Sorry if this is a little off topic. I am 13 and extremely set towards VMI. It just seems right to me close to home (Roanoke), and is a great way to become an officer. So, my main concern, out of curiosity, what would be the best majors/ minors that would give me a better chance of becoming a pilot in the Air Force? Thanks in advance.

Any major would suffice. HOWEVER, the Navy and Air Force ROTC programs take a particular interest in Engineering majors here (I.E. Mechanical Engineering).

Then again, there have been plenty of pilots that were produced out of here with a social sciences/humanities degree. :thumb:

Thanks! I was looking at civil engineering. My dad went to VT and he is a civil engineer.

Well I've applied and all I can do is wait until December 13th for a decision..... What was your major? If you could start over, would you still attend VMI, or do a "normal" ROTC program?

How much more difficult is it for out-of-state applicants to be accepted?

I think a better term would be "Traditional College Experience" All ROTC Programs are "Normal" they all teach the same curriculum.

Yes. VMI has been the best decision of my life. I literally went from a young immature boy to a responsible gentlemen in 3 years. Everyday is a challenge and when you go to sleep at night knowing you beat those obstacles; it's a rewarding feeling you may experience one day. I felt way above my peers from other ROTC programs at joint exercises and many people will hold you to a higher standard since you are a VMI cadet.

I believe it was about 40ish % acceptance rate.

Trey, I'm sure you probably already are being told these things by significant people in your life, but I'll reinforce: GRADES are really important, even in 7th grade. If you feel like you're not grasping concepts in math, science, writing, reading comprehension, current events and world history, ask your parents if they could look into tutoring. And remember -- your teachers work for YOU. Most teachers I've ever known LOVE it when students ask for help outside the classroom. My son's teachers usually report to school an hour early, and they let kids know that they can come in early for extra help. Find out what you can do for that extra help and extra attention, even if you don't really need it. You're probably naturally smart, but intense study now will certainly help you get through high school with top grades.

It's a great thing that you're so focused on a clear goal at such a young age. Keep us posted, and let us know if there's specific stuff we can help you with.

Good luck, and enjoy middle school. It actually goes by pretty fast if you work hard!

Also it is never too early too start studying fo rthe SAT's and too get in shape. To study for the SAT go to their website and do the practise questions everyday takes about 5 minutes, 10 if you have no clue and need to look up what they are asking.

To get in shape start a running program and do some core exercises. With running it all about the miles you have put in over the years. It kind of like saving and interest, the sooner you start the more interest you get.

Good luck to you. AND HAVE FUN getting there.

+1, @Trey. All good advice! Does your school have a cross country team?

Definitely attaining a Varsity Letter in a sport well help:thumb:

I would also recommend getting involved as part of your student's government body (President, VP, treasurer, etc.)

If you can, try and join Civil Air Patrol, JROTC, Boy Scouts, etc.

(Leadership roles)

VMI

Thanks for all the help. I am stronger in science and math than I am in English/ Writing. I get good grades on essays and all, just I feel like those are my two stongest subjest. I am in eighth grade and I am in Pre-AP Geometry (highest math I can take, and Pre-AP Science (Highest science that is available. This summer I will apply for a summer type program that focuses on math and science, sort of an engineering school. In HS I'm going to sign up for AFJROTC and if I have time, do CAP. I play a few sports, baseball, basketball, and golf. But currently I am only on the MS baseball and golf teams which I plan on doing through HS. I 'm learning French and will take it for four years. I am reading how physically tough VMI is. And I have already started training. I am getting a weight set soon and will go on a 6-month vegetarian diet so I can lose weight. Right now I'm 13 yrs old, 136 pounds, and am a little bit over 5'6'' Thanks! I aof course will not lift weight all the time. I do pushups every-other night, and I have a pull-up bar in my bedroom. Thanks, Trey.

I am no health and diet expert, and I am not in a position to evaluate your exercise and diet plan, but please, check with your pediatrician before beginning that 6-month vegetarian diet and then do what he or she says, making sure you have the full support and help of your parents or guardians. Proper nutrition at your age is critical for normal growth. Between the exercises, sports and weights, you'll need more "nutrition" than the average boy your age. With regular exercise and limiting unhealthful snacks and sodas, achieving your physical fitness goals should be easily attainable without going on a special "diet."

While I agree with payitforward, if one gets educated it is possible to eat a very healthful vegetarian diet. Consulting a doctor is always wise... and it does take both knowledge and work to do it in a healthful manner. See a nutritionist for help as well.

The only reason I would be down for it is because my sister is vegetarian. I think this would make it alittle easier because my mom makes meals individualy for her each night. One last question I have is about scholarships. Golf is my main sport. And I am the best player at my middle school. (Sorry if it sound like I'm bragging, i don't mean it. the only reason I think this is because I have won 1st place in all of my tournaments. I will soon be on my HS golf team. My only question is that VMI's golf team is a club-level sport, but I know there a many scholarships I can earn through golf. So my only worry is that they won't accept it.

Great! Having family and parental support in your vegetarian plan is a big plus. As for golf -- while I confess i know nothing about VMI golf, DS's best friend in high school ended up at West Point on the golf team even though he was never interested in military school or commissioning. (This was a huge kick in the pants for DS, whose dream has been Army officer since about age 5.)

Edit to clarify: The friend was RECRUITED to play golf for West Point. He was heavily recruited by 40 different universities. It's pretty awesome that he accepted the West Point challenge. I mean, he could have gone anywhere for free. Keep up the golf! Have you placed in any national tournaments?

I received a letter today from VMI containing an application for the Institute Scholars Program along with a scholarship application. I am one ACT point (29) from qualifying for the Scholar's Program, but if I send in the application and resume and essays will I be considered for other VMI-based scholarships?

Yes. You have nothing to lose.

Do it.

Whatever it takes to become a VMI cadet, keep telling yourself that. It should surely help you through your senior year of high school when Senioritis strikes. "This History test, I MUST do well in order to become a VMI cadet"
