DS wished to pursue 48E MOS with concentration in Russian. Between school, project GO and internship within his major, he should have 3-4 years of Russian, study abroad for a semester and a semester of internship abroad before his junior year... Is the regional officer a tough MOS to get? I know much depends on his grades/scores... just looking for some assurance that it's achievable...

There are no guarantees - there is about a 13% acceptance rate as an FAO. Also, you do realize that your DS cannot become an FAO for 7-10 years after commissioning, correct? I would advise him not to pursue a commission if he thinks he'll only be happy as a 48E - too many things can happen between now and then.

Did not realize the 7-10 year window... A friend/mentor was FAO right out of college, but that was 20 years ago...

Your DS should do some research into the current path to become an FAO and see if he's still interested. Www.faoa.org is a good place to start.

Something he may also be interested in is Civil Affairs. It is not one of the branches he can go right into, but if he's interested in Foreign Affairs he might be interested in CA.

Just wanted to chime in as a lurker on this thread to thank you for posting these questions and answers. DS is on a similar foreign language/foreign service track and probably hasn't researched the details very carefully yet.

Civil affairs is 80-90% reserves sooooo his chances are very small if he wants to go AD.

FAO is senior CPT and MAJ territory and I wouldn't even have that in my mind at this point.

 Same for DS although he is just starting journey.
