VMI ranked higher than the Coast Guard Academy

Hdc- it is not often that I throw the BS flag on threads in this forum because it is very rare that I have to do so. Anybody who pays much attention to those rankings is a statistical illiterate, because they are parsed in so many ways and rely so much on administrative gamesman ship that they are very close to useless. I am a very proud VMI alum as well as a VMI dad- and am as proud of my associations with VMI as one can be. But your comparisons are bogus and would be a pretty poor basis for anyone to make their decisions on where to go to school. I will reiterate for all of the prospextive cadets at an SMC that these are all excellent schools that have different strngths and weaknessses. And comparing the CGA this way is absurd- any kid who aspires to be a Coast Guard Officer would surely be far better served going to the USCGA than anywhere else, and would graduate with no debt and a great education as well as with a guaranteed commission. So again- your post is counter to the spirit of this forum, is counter to the world I have experienced for the last 37 years in which every Mil College alum supports each other except during athletic events, and is also just flat out the wrong way to look at things.
 
Could we say that VMI is recommended by 4 out of 5 dentists for their patients who chew gum?

Would've liked to see the original post by dutyhonorcountry... If he was talking about the Forbes rankings, those are a much more accurate indicator than the us news rankings, but hard to tell when it's been removed.
Not sure I'd agree with you about being much better served by attending the coast guard academy than VMI. Once you're at one of the academies you have limited flexibility in cross-commissioning to another service. I don't know many 18 year old kids who know exactly, with 100% certainty, which service would be the best choice for them, so for a large number of prospective students VMI offers more flexibility...
 
Some folks do know which branch of service they want.

Also, tuition is for four years... what about the service obligation? A free education to be miserable for 5 years is not the best trade-off. As NAS pointed out, if you're not certain, an academy may not be the best route.

CGA is more competitive than VMI, academically, and as far as admissions is concerned. CGA is the much better path for someone who wants to be a Coast Guard officer. BUT, if you are not sure if the Coast Guard is for you, VMI gives you added flexibility and more service options. Obviously CGA is there to feed the USCG...

I like VMI. I had a buddy who went there, and I enjoyed visiting once.

I would have like to have seen the original post too. The threads here, but no one (except maybe one person) knows what the original statement was.
