As a parent of a Mid., I am saddened as to what is going on at the academy do to the shutdown. Education in some areas has halted. Mids teaching themselves. These young men and women had lots of choices in terms of where to continue their education and they chose to serve and this is how they are treated. I understand it is not the USNA's fault. I love the place. Just wondering if any of the potential Class of 2018 candidates are waivering because of what is going on with sequester and government shutdown????

This is not the norm. The last time this sort of thing happened was something like 20 years ago. Honestly, it's worse for the remaining professors than it is for the Mids. All 8 sections of Intro to Systems Engineering is being taught by one instructor who is teaching this class for the first time. He's teaching all 6 periods, 5 days a week. The math department normally has 17 military instructors and 70-something civilians. So not only are they trying to teach their own sections, but also trying to cover those 70 other instructors. Most of them are "proctoring" 3 different sections each period.

While the situation is not ideal, it proves the truly high caliber leadership among the military academic staff. They're all taking on way more than they should ever have to and I haven't heard one of them complain about it.

And as a side note, this hasn't been tragic for all mids. These past few days are the first time I've legitimately understood anything in my Physics and Diff Eqs classes.

This veered off subject a bit more than I expected, but point is that what's happening right now shouldn't deter you from applying here. They are all doing an incredible job of continuing to teach the mids and where the military instructors can't cover everything, there are so many other mids that understand certain subjects so well that they can teach them.

Not waivering at all

As a parent of a candidate for 2018 .. it is still full steam ahead.

This too shall pass .

^^^^^ Agreed.

Thanks Pleber2016 for the insight from a Mid's perspective! Hoping the foolishness of this shutdown comes to an end soon.

No worries for our DS. He is at the Yard today for his Official Baseball visit. Is as excited as ever....probably more than ever!

30 years later about all I can remember is d=rt and F=ma....

Oh, and maybe also, given y= x^2 + c , then dy/dx = 2x ... Just don't ask me what that means! :unhappy:

It's the slope of the tangent at any point along the curve y=x^2 + c.
