I've searched on this forum as well as the internet and cannot locate any information about the impact of tropical storms or hurricanes on the training schedule during the swamp phase of ranger school. DS started swamp phase last Sunday and should be in the middle of his 1st FTX right now. It looks like tropical storm Karen is predicted to come ashore in eastern Louisiana and scoot across the coastline to the Florida panhandle. Do they pull them from the field during the height of the storm for classroom time or relocate them?

Don't know the answer to your question, but if Karen hits there it will immediately downgrade back to a tropical storm as soon as it hits the coast. It probably won't be as bad as you imagine but whatever course they take, I've no doubt they will keep them safe.

Funny you should ask.

Last year my son was doing SERE C School, the second week of the school Hurricane Isaac decided to roll through the Gulf region. Our son later told us that they were out in the field (with less then nothing) when the storm hit. The training went on as usual, he said it rained 11 inches in one night along with the wind. Because of the classified nature of the SERE training he couldn't say much other then there was never any option to stop the training, all he said was that it was an exciting night, one he would care not to repeat.

Can't really say whether they will stop training for Ranger School, just keep in mind the old saying "If it ain't raining, it ain't training" I'm sure if the danger level reaches to high they will take all precautions. On the other hand, what a training opportunity during "Swamp" training".

Actually the Ranger Cadre occasionally schedule hurricanes. It give them a warm and fuzzy feeling to bestow a good storm upon their charges.

Seriously they have excellent medical services. A storm would prevent the Airborne drop but that is in an earlier phase than your sons. The one thing that they are careful of is lightening storms. Lightening is the one thing the Cadre cannot control. DS was there for a couple of storms last fall.

Relax, in another week(last week of Florida) they will be stuffing him with lots of food. A few days later you will be stuffing him full of food. DS was there for thanksgiving and they actually had a big feast.

Congrats and show up early for a good seat for graduation. It is a great show to watch.

I'm not too worried about the rain or storms with this system. But, I wonder if the swamp critters will be on the move (i.e. rattlers, moccasins, and gators). The idea certainly gives me the creeps.

So far Ranger School has certainly taken its toll on the numbers in his class. They started with 234 and only 70 made it through Darby phase. The cadre then added 30 "recycles" to their class and then on to Mountain phase. Only 50 of the 100 made it through mountain. They were supposed to fly to Florida and parachute in (if airborne qualified), but were instead bussed there due to sequestration. From what I've read, not as many recycle out of swamp phase, but you never know...

He is very close to finishing, Florida was the easiest for DS.

They will pull them from the field if the hurricane actually hits near Eglin. Not only is there a serious water danger- but severe winds in the woods are really dangerous- the Army won't take that chance.

Funny thing, those swamp critters are what they had to catch and eat during SERE, the storm just made them easier to catch.

There wasn't too much of the tropical storm left when it meandered over to Pensacola, so it did not interfere with their FTX. DS finished ranger school this week without recycling during any of the phases and will be tabbed at graduation on Friday. He was initially scheduled to begin mortar leaders course next Monday, but instead will begin RSCL next week instead.

Congratulations to your son on his imminent graduation from Ranger School. I'm wondering whether he got to try the rattlesnake sushi during the storm.

No rattlesnake sushi...He did get to pet the diamondback they have at Fort Rudder, but he has a new appreciation of venomous snakes after viewing the slide presentation of snake bite injuries.

We just returned home after attending DS' ranger school graduation on Friday. The Rangers in Action program prior to graduation was really something to behold. We had initially heard that there was a possibility that the blackhawks would not be part of the program because of budget cuts and sequestration, so we were very pleased to see them in attendance. DS looked pretty lean and thinks that he may have lost 20-25 lbs overall. The highlight for him occurred after graduation when he had the opportunity for a 1:1 conversation with Col. Puckett.
