I am an MSIII on a 4-Year AROTC scholarship hoping to branch into my state's National Guard as a Signal Officer for 8+ years.

I was wondering if anyone would be so kind as to explain the process of selecting a slot/unit for the NG from ROTC. My evaluator, an MSIV, explained that there are apparently booths at LDAC where each state has something like an OSM and a list of available 2LT slots and you just have to approach these booths and sign for a slot.

Is this accurate, missing info, or completely off-base?

Thanks for any help! :thumb:

Yeah there are booths there to help you find a slot and gain a LOA to a unit. Your school should also have some sort of liaison officer to help cadets make the transition as well.

Personally I would try to work with that liaison with your school rather than wait till LDAC. I don't see Signal slots filling super fast but you never know.

Thanks, Aglahad!

I will talk to my cadre to find out about who is said liaison officer. We're a small program with 5 cadre members and three civilian staff so if one of them plays the part, it shouldn't be too hard to find out.

Talk with your state guard's officer recruiter. The cadre should be able to put you in touch with him/her. They will walk you through the entire process.

The Booth process at LDAC is not what you want to rely on. At our school the HRA helps the Cadets find their unit. I know you'll find this surprising, but each ROTC Battalion does things a little differently. Some may have someone from the guard on the staff. Some may rely on a nearby guard unit for assistance. Contacting the Guard OSM is also a great idea. If you google <your state> army national guard OSM you will probably find what you are looking for. A few of our cadets that signed up at "the booth at LDAC" ended up not getting the slot they expected. Be proactive and persistent.

Sound advice. Thanks, clarkson.
