Great movie. I couldn't believe when it was over that it had run for 134 minutes. The director Paul Greengrass did the last two Matt Damon/Jason Bourne movies with their great chase scenes and did quite well here with a skiff going after a 17,000 ton freighter at 20 knots per hour.

Many will wish they could have seen more of the Navy SEALs and less of Somali dentistry.

Can't wait to see it. Unfortunately the movie hadn't made its way to the Eastern Shore of MD theater near my parents, but it's on my list.

If you haven't seen Gravity in IMAX 3D.... DO IT!

I haven't been so stressed out in a movie, in a LONG time.

I did not like Gravity, but I did not see it in 3D, my wife can't see 3D movies because it can send her into a seizure. I can see why it would be good in 3D, but I really did not care for the movie. I was looking forward to seeing it and went out the day it came out. Maybe I was expecting too much. I do like both stars, Sandra Bullock and George Clooney.
A lot of the people that I know that saw it, loved it.

Agree, movie was great and flew by. As EDelahanty pointed out... Somali dentistry was the worst part of the movie!

"Captain Phillips" -- best movie I've seen in many, many years. DS would LOVE it.

I may have missed something, but I was pretty sure you were old enough to see the movie without your parents. If Dr. Mrs. LITS won't take you, let us know and we'll arrange for a chaperone.

Cap't Phillips

I personally loved Captain Phillips, and thought that it was a great movie! They did a fantastic job showing all that goes into these rescues!

Great Job!

I loved the movie, but the whole time I was wondering WHY there were no weapons on the ship. Knowing there was a problem with pirates, you would think they would have weapons to protect themselves.

Are weapons aloud in international waters? I was wandering the same thing. Great movie!

I'm sure the MM or CG people can answer better, but some ships do have weapons, while most do not due to liability and safety issues. These are merchant sailors, and most of their parent corporations do not want to encourage gunfighting on the high seas.

Comes down to port city laws, safety issues and liability (and insurance).

Easy answer is no.
The IMO (International Maritime Organization) put out a circular with regards to arming merchant ships.

FYI Captain Richard Phillips was in violation of MLL policy at the time. MLL policy was to remain 600 miles off the coast of East Africa.

Actually the answer is up to the flag state.
"The carriage of armed security personnel, or the use of military or law-enforcement officers (duly authorized by the Government of the flag State to carry firearms for the security of the ship) should be subject to flag State legislation and policies and is a matter for the flag State to authorize, in consultation with ship owners, companies and ship operators."

Captain Phillips is an idot. This was confirmed to be by more than one person who has actually sailed with him. I have heard its not a half bad movie if you can get past the hollywood fluff. I myself choose not to see it because the whole event was not about one man and yet the title of the movie seems to suggest it is. This feed into the false narrative that Phillips himself played along with even though he knew it was untrue. I have better places to be with my precious movie time.

And what pray tell whould port city laws have to do in the slightest with vessels in international waters? Since you were only the Coast Guard you might not realize this but the answer is NOTHING!

an unsupressed weapon is loud no matter where it is fired. Unless, of course, like the proverbial tree in the woods there is no one there to hear it. But if no one was there to hear it, who fired it? Now I understand ... you must be a liberal then who thinks guns can kill people without anyone pulling the trigger.

Well assuming we're still talking about ships that do commerce (and I know that's a stretch for U.S. flagged vessels) it's safe to assume that SOME of them will eventually enter a port (you know, all that fun "Last Port of Call" and "Next Port of Call" the CG's always bothering you about).

But I agree, internationally, there's not much to restrict you. Even the mean Coast Guard assumes there are weapons on board and asks you to lock them during a boarding (in fact, it generally makes sense, to me to carry one...)

I think of it like this... I have a concealed carry permit in VA. I carry a .38 spl. (in VA). If I'm carrying my firearm I have to understand where I'm going. If I'm heading to my church, I can't have a firearm. If I'm going to a federal office, I can't carry. If I'm going to a theater, generally, I can't carry. So, sure, in my car I can carry all day long... but I have to be mindful of where I am, and what my next "port of call" is (aka, a theater).

Um.... maybe a 25 mm cannon, but small arms? Only loud to the shooter.

Just going to hijack this thread....

Hey guys,
Speaking of Movies/Shows has anyone viewed the English show Strike Back?
I just started watching it. It's really good IMHO.
It is about a English Counter-Terriosum/intellangence group called Section 20. It's like a mix of Jason Bourne, and Genration Kill.
Check it out!
