Mysteriously worded waiver letter?

DS received a letter this week from Naval Acadamy Admissions stating that he had been granted a waiver (we didn't even know that a waiver was being sought - just noted that his status has changed on the DodMERB site last week - to Waiver Granted USNA). The letter was worded in a way to make me (not DS - ) very hopeful - it said "when you graduate you will be able to assigned to any non-resticted duty" or something along those lines. Is getting a waiver this soon is a good sign (he was just DQ'd medically on 10/15)? Or am I reading too much into this? Cautiously optimistic & very, very grateful for a waiver out of the blue!!! No nomination yet, DS has an interview w/Senator's committee in a few weeks.

You're reading way too much into this. I believe a 'waiver granted' letter will always state whether there will be restrictions upon commissioning and what they would be. The speed with which the waiver was granted could be due to many factors, including just some current slack in the system. Patience. Work on the nominations. All good things will come in their due time. Don't set yourself up for potential disappointment.

What was the waiver for?

I believe it is a good sign in that SA's only grant waivers to canidates that they believe to be competitive. First of many hurdles. Best of luck.:thumb:

Waiver was for atopic dermatitis. Very mild case, no Rx for years & years. Yes, thank you for your thoughts. I will settle down & not get my hopes up. Fortunately DS did not read the letter like I did and did not get his hopes up. It is still a long road I know. But still very grateful to have cleared this hurdle which I thought might be the end of the road for DS. Thanks again for your kind words!

My understanding is that Admissions does not initiate the medical waiver process until they are prepared to offer an appointment. It would be a waste of effort of the medical staff otherwise.

But I believe there have been people on this forum who received waivers (and nominations) in the past who did not get in. While it seems that USNA would not waste their time on waivers for the unqualified, there are no guarantees. Good luck to your son, CHS11111!

If the Admissions Board feels the candidate is good enough in all areas to be qualified or "Q'ed" and there is a medical rejection, the Board initiates the waiver if the medical condition is not too serious. That's what has happened to your son and the Board has also said that his waived medical condition will not restrict his commissioning specialty IF he gets appointed and graduates. This is all good so far as it means your son's name has made it through the initial 15,000+ who applied and now goes with approximately 6000 others to the Admissions OFFICE which makes the actual appointments---not the Board. The mechanics of what the Admissions Office does is the mystery of the ages. It is rumored that it involves witches around boiling kettles, bat wings, chicken bones and incantations not fit for human ears but the appointments get done. Good luck to your boy.

CHS,

You are WAY ahead of many waivers! We did not get our final of three until March.

Relax, you just made thru another hoop. Best of luck!

Update - Principal Nomination!!!

DS received a call from our Congressman last night saying that he had received the Principal Nom for the USNA!!!! From all I have read, this is very, very promising, correct??! DS has a waiver and a letter from USNA saying he is fit for unrestricted duty when he graduates, so I assume that means he is medically Q'd, took his CFA at NASS & did very well, & is a 4.0+ student w/4 Varsity sports, tons of extra cir, & leadership roles as well as volunteer hours. Can we celebrate do you think? Cautiously excited!! Can anyone tell me how long before the admissions office will send the official word? Stunned & extremely grateful...................

As long as he keeps his nose clean, keeps his grades up, and doesn't get seriously injured, then yes... you can celebrate. Congrats on the principal nomination. :thumb: And welcome aboard!
