Another LOA Question

When a MOC nominates a principal candidate and nine unranked alternates and after a candidate has completed all other admission requirements, then:
- LOA + principal nomination = BFE
- but does LOA + unranked alternate status = BFE ?
- or in the later case does candidate go into and compete in the national pool?

How does this candidate become an automatic BFE if the MOC has given a principal nomination to someone else? Wouldn't the candidate who gets the principal nomination be the automatic in with 3Q? Wouldn't the candidate with the LOA, but an alternate nomination, go into the national pool at that point?

Yes, you are absolutely correct. But because the candidate has an LOA then they'll definitely take that person off the national pool. Many MOCs choose a principal nom, at least in part, for this reason. It's a way to get 2 folks into the academy from their constituency, and that's not bad for votes (or so they believe).
 
There is also some ability to move noms around.

So if you got a nom from your senator and from your rep they can count it towards either one. If you add a presidential nom into the mix then it opens even more opportunities for USNA to move noms around.

We don't know who my son's appointment was counted against the senator or representative.
 
Kinnem, I don't know if anybody has posed this questions before. Does the MOC always know that the principle nom is automatically admitted with 3Q. In other words, what stops the MOC from issuing the principle nom when they know that by doing so gives the kid an appointment given that the academy has already judged DS or DD to be qualified for entry?

Not sure what you're asking by your second sentence. However, yes the MOC knows that a 3Q'ed principal nom will get the appointment. If they don't know then they are entirely ignorant (which I'm sure happens from time to time).

Many MOCs do NOT give a principal nomination. I suspect most just submit a slate and let the academy decide. I don't have the stats though.
