This is my first thread on this site and to start out, I would like to thank everyone for making this whole thing possible and helping out so many candidates with all of there questions! Anyway, I believe I am "mostly" qualified for an appointment to USNA but the one thing holding me back might be my SAT scores ( I have yet to take the ACT). I received a 770 Math 640 Critical Reading and 620 Writing. The reason for my trepidation is that of the people I talked to who currently attend the academy, most told me their scores were higher than mine. Mind you, I am 4/100 class rank, 4.0 GPA, State Senator at NJ Boy's State, 2 Varsity letter Athlete as a freshmen ( I am currently a senior), class president, Model United Nations delegate, tons of community service, the works. However, I just don't know if my my SAT are up to par. If anyone can help me or tell me what sections I should raise (im taking the ACT soon) it would be much appreciated. Also, for anyone who already has received an LOA what kind of scores did you receive? Thanks for the help everyone and good luck to all applicants!!!!

Do you have a LOA? Those are good scores, but what matters is how they compare to those in your congressional district which none of us have insight on. Retake them if you want to try and raise your scores, you never know until you try! :thumb:

You are...

Your SAT scores are amazing. the writing for some may be alittle low (for some)but honestly I think you are an extremely well rounded candidate. I hope you get in!!!!

You mentioned that you lettered as a Freshman. Are you currently playing any varsity sports?

Thanks so much, it really means a lot! When you said the writing may be low for some, are you referring to "some" of the admissions board delegates?

I currently am the Captain of my Varsity Soccer Team and was selected for 1st team all county for my division (I was SO happy to be given this honor) and I will be starting my spring track season soon. For track, I am also the team captain and hope to break my mile time record by at least 15 seconds (my record from last year is 4:58!!!) Is there any reason for the question specifically or just curiosity? Thanks again for the reply!!!

Being a well rounded person is a big advantage in the eyes of the admission board. Your leadership position in soccer and track will be a huge plus in the selection process.

As I told my DS (2018 candidate-with LOA/recruited athlete in baseball), "It's harder to get in the door than to stay in the room". I hope that makes some sense. The admissions process is one that you and your parents will never forget. Most non-SA applicants have not a clue to how difficult it is to get in a SA.

GOOD LUCK TO YOU!!

Thanks so much and it makes complete sense. I surely will remember this process for a very long time. My parents, on the other hand, might not. I have tried to do just about everything I could by myself because I know "Mommy and Daddy" wont be able to hold my hand if, with some luck, I make it to Plebe Summer. Thanks again!

Thanks for your input. I also am going to have my NROTC scholarship interview quite soon; it is very settling to know getting denied from the academy is not the end all be all in regard to my career as a Naval Officer. If there's a will, there's a way (and I sure have the will, I just need to find my way!) Thanks again.

:D

I meant people on the forum will say "Oh may want to boost that up" but honestly reading and writing are so important and your scores are pretty much the best. (; Haha you will be just fine!!!! Good luck

Your SAT scores at at or above average for the class of 2016. See here: westpoint.edu/admissions/Shared%20Documents/Profile2016.pdf

Quit worrying. Keep in mind, as others pointed out, a lot will depend on the competition you're up against but you are obviously qualified. Work your backup plans rather than spend time worrying.

Do you have any info about ACT scores and class rank like those in your like but for the Naval Academy?

I have an LOA, and I am not a recruited athlete.

My superscore ACT is a 35 (34 E 34 M 36 R 34 S)

I have also taken the SAT once, and got a 2090 (I forget the subscore but math was 660 and the other two were >700)

Your scores are pretty decent, but whether they are "good enough" probably depends a lot on how competitive your district/state is. USNA puts a lot of weight on the math section of both tests (from what I have been told), so it certainly helps that your best score is in math.

NROTC

NROTC is a great avenue. I have plenty of friends that are 0-6 (Captains) that went NROTC. One individual out of our unit is now a BGEN in charge of the MEF. Best advice my daughter was given when weighing her options is to keep your eye on the end goal of earning the butter bars. What you have to ask yourself is what type of experience you want getting there.
