The Future of Army Football (and Rich Ellerson)

The Future of Army....

In talking with a lot of the Cadets Coach Ellerson is very well liked on campus, because he understands the culture of West Point. It is hard to build a winning sports program, when the cards in the deck are already in place. In other words you don't have much to choose from. I just hope when Coach Ellerson get fired, he doesn't get fired on a street corner in Philadelphia, like Stan Brock. Maybe a younger alum of West Point could help.

"Rich Ellerson will make $401,000 this year. That’s 103rd out of 119 reported FBS salries. Navy’s coach averages $1.6 million."

Shouldn't this be a good thing that he is not one of the highest paid coaches. Granted, you do get what you pay for and Navy does have a better program, but I believe that public universities, especially the service academies should be applauded for not spending big money on coaches. As much as I love college football, I believe that too much money is often spent by colleges on it across the board.

All that being said, it would seem to me that Army could use a coaching change to shake things up and attempt to bring more success back to the program.

You're confusing Bob Sutton with Stan Brock.

What cadet told you that? I don't know a single person here who is a Rich Ellerson fan...

and what do you mean by "the cards in the deck are already in place?"

Coaches are paid out of money that comes from sports revenue, not taxpayer dollars.

Coming from a school and a football program with only 9 winning seasons in a 40 year school history, this article is hauntingly true about similarities of my team and about its tendency for tolerating losses. It seems like like there is no pride in my school or in the football program. We're a laughing stock of the league, and it makes me sick that there seems to be no way out of this acceptance of failure and that "we'll get better next year." It's a joke around here that if something bad occurs "well thats Valley Heights for ya! What did you expect?" Even radical coaching changes such as bringing in 2 state champion coaches is not enough to turn the program around. The community and students are just ingrained with this sense that a losing team is ok to have. For the 17th straight year, our biggest rival has won the league championship and for the 4th straight year have gone to State. My mom works in that community, and she has said the culture there is very different in regards to winning games than what we have in my hometown.

West Point needs to do something now before its too late and cadets just begin to not care about their performance. It's a disease that starts to just eat away at everything you do and pretty soon we start producing lackluster Army officers. That's not an Army that I want to be a part of.

LMAO! That's pretty funny. You were kidding, right?

No. It is actually that bad! Sorry if I may be venting but I'm about fed up with my highschool and its commitment to mediocrity.

Most cadets already don't really care about the team's performance, except for this weekend.

Oh, I fully understand about your feelings regarding the high school team. I don't think the quality of cadets turned out at the Academy will have anything to do with the quality of their football team though.

Academy grads are the best and brightest, I do really doubt that the quality of cadets will head south. But as a member of 4 losing football seasons myself I can't help but feel something for what the players are going through and what could happen if the Academy didn't already have a culture of success and accomplishment.
