Just wanted to see where others are at in the process and hopefully I can help some people out.

So far, I've interviewed with Sherrod Brown's office.

The academy Coordinator said once Rob Portman's office completes their interview, the 2 will meet and all nomination eligible candidates who do not yet have a nomination from their district will receive a nomination from 1 of the 2 senators. This way, nobody in Ohio get's a double nomination. I'm not sure how it works if you've applied for multiple service academies though.

I have interviews scheduled with Joyce(OH-14) and Portman for early December.

I've read on here that many nominating sources are receiving less applications than years past so I'll definitely inquire if it's the same here in Ohio. Less applications is always a good thing for those of us who are applying :thumb:

DD already had interview with Brown's committee and Portman's committee. Like you, she has interview with Joyce's committee on December 6. Good luck with your meeting with Portman's committee - if it's the same group, DD found them very receptive and engaging. She enjoyed the interview with them. Less so with Brown's group...although both interviews appeared to go well. Good luck! :thumb:

All in the same boat

Like MosMom, DS has had his interviews with Both Senators Portman and Brown committees and are also scheduled with Congressman Joyce's team on December 7th.

Feedback was similar on both interviews with no real surprises. Did get the same information about their respective teams getting together to enhance the number of nominations from Ohio. So all of this is pretty consistent so far.

Also, remember that this will be Congressman Joyce's first go around with all this. It's been reported that his predecessor, Congressman Latourette used to lead the state in nominations as he enjoyed the bragging rights.

Just out of curiosity have any of you received an LOA?

Thanks and good luck to all!

I'm medically DQ'd at the moment so no LOA for me. I just have to sit back and hope for a waiver.

Interviewed with Senator Brown in October and Representative Ryan this month. Will hear back from Ryan in December and Brown in January. Unfortunately Portman gave me the Heisman...

Currently DD has recently taken a remedial spirometry test and is waiting for the results from DODMETS. So, no LOA.

DD received from Marcy Kaptur via a stamped letter yesterday the following.

"I have selected you as an alternate to our principal nominee to the U.S. Naval Academy. Having received an alternate nomination, your name is now placed in a national pool where you will compete on the basis of ..."

Does anyone know what this means. I do know that 2 other candidates from our neighborhood received the exact same letter. Seems odd that this could happen if only 10 letters were sent out.

Went to both interviews today. I felt that both went extremely well and I was told I would be notified by the end of the month of their decision.

Good Luck to everyone else!

I'm super anxious to hear the decision.

Here is a 2012 applicant's experiences with Portman and Brown. Looks like we'll probably hear right before christmas. Brown's office says January but I was told December at my interview.

Senator Brown
LAST YEAR
8/2/11 – DS (high school senior then) submitted completed application packet a couple weeks before his senior year started. The early submission was not an easy task but benefitted him in two ways 1) he could devote his time and energy to the 4 AP classes on his senior schedule, the fall sports practice and meet schedule, his work schedule, and his family responsibilities when the school year started 2) Senator Brown awarded 25 extra points to the applicant’s file if received in August (his office began accepting applications on August 1). Last year Senator Brown requested the completed application be submitted on line “as a PDF file.” DS did exactly that on August 2.
9/14/11 – DS received an e-mail requesting that he send his completed application. (Wlhat??? It was submitted, successfully – no bounce back, no undeliverable message on this end – on August 2!) DS immediately re-sent the application packet with a cover letter documenting the 8/2/11 submission.
9/15/11 – DS called to confirm receipt of app. packet. He was told to send it – via e-mail – one more time (now a total of 3 times). The coordinator told him the PDF on-line submissions were running into glitches and not to worry, his packet would receive the full 25 point early submission bonus points.
9/19/11 – DS received regular mail confirmation of application packet receipt
10/4/11 – e-mail notification of interview
10/5/11- regular mail notification of interview
10/15/11 – interview w/ Senator’s panel in Cincinnati
11/29/11 – DS called Senator Brown’s Service Academy Coordinator to ask about timing of notification –she said all interviewees will hear yes or no in writing just before Christmas. She also said that Brown confers with Portman first.
12/23/11 – “no nomination” letter received (letter dated 12/20/11)
THIS YEAR
7/31/12 – DS placed completed application packet in the mailbox here in Ohio just before getting in the car to make the 1300 mile journey out to Roswell, New Mexico to begin his USNA Foundation Prep year at the New Mexico Military Institute (report date to NMMI was 8/2/12 for the preps) PDF file/e-mail submission to Senator Brown not even an option this year – just too many glitches last year I guess. Again, two reasons for the early submission. 1) No way to devote ANY time to anything except being a RAT (Recruit At Training) as soon as his boots hit the New Mexican desert on August 2! 2) And, just like last year, Senator Brown awarded 25 extra points to the applicant’s file if received in August (his office began accepting applications on August 1 – same as last year)
8/11/12 – Here at home in Ohio a letter arrived from Brown – it was the confirmation of receipt of DS’s application packet
10/3/12 – DS received a text message out in New Mexico from Senator Brown’s office requesting him to set up a phone interview. He responded as soon as he had phone privilege. The interview was set for a Saturday in November.
11/17/12 – DS had his phone interview with Senator Brown’s panel.
As of today – still waiting for the “just before Christmas” notification

Senator Portman
LAST YEAR
6/27/11 – DS submitted his completed application packet via regular mail
6/30/11 – confirmation of receipt of application received in regular mail
9/30/11 – DS faxed Sept. 10 ACT results to Academy Coordinator
11/22/11 – DS received “no interview” letter
THIS YEAR
6/29/12 – DS submitted his completed application packet via regular mail
7/9/12 – confirmation of receipt of application received in regular mail
12/6/12 - Here at home in Ohio a letter arrived from Portman – “no interview” for DS. The letter said, “My office received more than 400 applications for a nomination this year. Out of this number, we were only able to select 150 candidates for interview for a possible 40 nominations. With such a wealth of outstanding students to choose from, the interview selection process was very difficult. Unfortunately, you have not been selected for an interview this year…etc.”

These next 3 weeks or so are going to be nerve wracking

It is not odd at all that others received the same letter.

What this means is that your Congresswoman has or will submit a "principal" nominee and up to 9 additional (likely) unranked alternates from their district. This means that IF THE PRINCIPAL NOMINEE IS QUALIFIED (medically, academically, physically), the academy must offer them an appointment that will be 'charged' against the MOC slot. If the principal is NOT qualified, the academy can then select a candidate for the MOC slot from the alternates in the slate - that is based on their own scoring (similar to a competitive nomination slate). If the slate was submitted with "ranked" alternates, it means that the academy must select the highest MOC ranked candidate that is Qualified, but the wording in your letter does not make that clear.

Even if the principal is qualified or the entire slate was ranked, your DD may can still receive an appointment as she now has a nomination. It just means that she no longer is primarily competing with 9 candidates from your district, but is now competing against around a 1000 qualified candidates from the National Pool. An appointment would then be based on how the academy scores her file, her own Qualifications, and the class composition goals/needs.

Best wishes as the next three months will seem torturous.

HydroJim - Last year DS received letters from Portman and Brown on 12/21: one informing him of a nomination, the other informing him that the two offices has coordinated nominations to maximize Ohio's representation so a second nomination would not be forthcoming. An early Christmas gift as he did not expect a nomination from either senator.

A separate nomination came from the local MOC office to a different academy.

If you do get a nomination, the most nerve wracking weeks will be the 8-12 weeks waiting to hear if you receive an appointment.

One more week until I expect we'll be getting notifications in the mail.

Keep checking that mail box!

DD received letter from Rep. Joyce today. She received a nom from him! Very excited, but still need to clear up remedial situation.

Got my letter from Joyce today. Received a nomination to USMA and USAFA! Now I just have to hope for a medical waiver.

Does anyone know how Joyce does their nominations?

I don't know how he does it but we're baffled....DS also received his nom today from Congressman Joyce for USMA and USAFA but he stopped his USAFA app weeks ago and has a USNA LOA for which he didn't get a nom for! Go figure.

We're not sure how to proceed with this. Haven't heard from Senator Portman or Brown yet but this having the LOA to Navy without the nom is more than just puzzling. Anybody have any advice? Would appreciate it.

Sydney C.- Maybe he'll get one from Portman or Brown. Best of luck to everyone!

I believe when the original application was completed by my DD, she had to list the order of preference for academies. She only listed one, USNA, so this didn't really pertain to her. In the letter informing her that she had an interview with the Congressman, Rep Joyce's office asked that she bring any changes or additions to her application to the interview... Did DS notify him at the interview that his application to USAFA was stopped? Did he make him aware of the LOA from the USNA?

I would have DS email Rep. Joyce's office and let them know of his predicament. I believe Rep. Joyce's office confers with both Senators Brown and Portman. Maybe they can put in a good word for your DS with Portman or Brown. Or, Rep. Joyce might have a nom to the USNA still available for him. But, I believe it is important you make Rep Joyce very aware that DS has an LOA without a nom.

Very sorry to hear this problem, especially since your DS has a LOA. I have a feeling Rep. Joyce will do what he can to clear this up for your son, if you make him aware of the problem. You have nothing to lose by contacting him - but you do have everything to gain. Good luck!

Thanks to those who are offering insight into this perplexing issue....The conundrum continued today.

As we left the story earlier, DS received MOC nomination to USMA yesterday (along with USAFA nom) but no nom to USNA for which he has a LOA. Then today, he received Sen. Brown's nomination to USMA as well. So I guess the good news is he has two noms to USMA, which I hope bodes well, but no nom to USNA with an LOA.

Can't figure it and have call into Congressman's office to try and get an explanation.
