So. I realize that upperclassmen aren't supposed to be 'friends' with C4Cs. How does that work out if you were, prior to getting into the Academy, really close to an upperclassman (eg: very good friends from school, siblings, cousins, etc.). Do you just not act like friends for a year or..? The question isn't really relevant to me, I'm just curious as to how this is handled.

You would have to tread very lightly.

Perception is everything and rules are rules. Sure, if you were friends before, go hangout every once in a blue moon but not frequently enough where people start wondering. Generally speaking though, that C4C will have a much greater bond with their classmates than before with that upperclassman friend from high school.

As far as family goes, I would believe no one would give you grief about it.

When I went on my DVP trip, my cadet was a 3rd class. We had a doolie across the hall, and whenever they encountered one another there was the obligatory salute and some brief conversation (mostly wishing the guy luck in the Wing Open Boxing match). Not overly friendly, but not a cold shoulder either.

Guess that's how the rule looks in real life. :)

Okay, that makes sense...so you can hang out and talk sometimes as long as you're not in their room all the time or one of the people they regularly spend time with?

And...I see how that would make sense, but as a foster kid, there's a fine line between family and friends. Luckily I don't know anyone from USAFA at that level...

If there's a prior relationship generally nobody will mess with you as long as you aren't ALWAYS hanging out or anything. Honestly, if you and your upperclass friend aren't in the same squad, you won't run into each other enough for it to be an issue. If you talk to each other at a game or in Fairchild you're fine, but if they visit your room more than every now and then...you might run into some issues.

Just be careful, and like a previous poster said-you'll generally form a really tight bond with your classmates due to the way this place is set up.

Okay. I believe I get the general idea now... :)

It's only one year of not being overly close to cadets in the classes above you. I can't imagine that being too big of a deal to handle.

Basically, don't let there be an appearance of undue influence. If people think you are getting breaks because of being friends with someone ahead of you, it tends to sour things in a hurry.
