I logged in to my DoDMERB account today and found out I did not meet the standards for all 3 of the academies I'm applying to. The cause was this:

D155.70 Myopia - refractive error greater than -8.00 diopters (spherical equivalent)

It seemed like my hopes had been crushed. However, then I took a look at the prescription for my glasses.

OD: (-6.00) - (2.25) x 177
OS: (-6.75) - (2.00) x 008

Now, I'm no optometrist, but according to my research, I believe the first numbers (the -6.00 and -6.75) should be my diopters of Myopia (nearsightedness). If I'm not mistaken, shouldn't I be within the limit? And this pair of glasses was just prescribed in August, so it couldn't have changed that much with my eye exam having been in October. Or am I missing something here?

I'm heading to my optometrist tomorrow to see how this works. Maybe there is hope?

For USNA the limit is -6.

No worries. I have worse eyes than you, and was able to get a waiver. It's possible; keep pushing on.

Thanks for the reply. I checked my numbers with my optometrist and the contracted doctor. Those are indeed correct. So now I have a little hope

Though that doesn't explain how I'm disqualified from USMA (my first choice, sorry Navy haha). It appears I'm under the limit of -8.00, I don't see why that is disqualifying.

Also I received this disqualification:

D155.40 Distant visual acuity that does not correct to an acceptable standard

My vision at the time was 20/25 corrected in both eyes (my optometrist stated this during exam in August). I thought that met one of the standards for DoDMERB. Is this waiverable?

Just to clarify. Spherical equivalent is not just the first number. It is the first number plus half of any cylinder. So in your case for your spectacles you have a spherical equivalent of -7.125 in the right eye and -7.75 in the left eye.

Now, that does not mean that is your actual spherical equivalent, that is just your spectacle prescription. Sometimes the full myopic prescription is not prescribed for any number of reasons, so your actual refractive error may have over 8 diopters of spherical equivalent, especially when it is so close to 8 already in the left eye.
