Does Your school offer ROTC credit?

Im curious as to which schools/universities/colleges offer credit for ROTC classes. How that credit is counted? Are they enrollment credits? Will they count toward degrees? There seems to be variation with this from school to school.

my DD's school does count ROTC Class + Lab as regular university free elective units. They count as 2 units/semester MSI year, 3 units per semester MSII year, and 4 units/semester MSIII and MSIV years.

The problem is that her science major required courses plus the required core electives (languag, english, history, math, social science, etc.) leaves only four units for "free electives". So although her Transcript will show 24 semester units of military science, 20 of those are not used toward her graduation minimum unit requirements. Therefore she will graduate wit 20 units over the minimum requirements for graduation.

If on the other hand she were a criminology, sociology, english, history, econ, art history, or other non-STEM major, the MS courses would replace other University "free elective" usable units and ease up her academic load considerably.

Another college where she could have used her ROTC scholarship but chose not to, a UC, does not recognize military science units at all... for AROTC, NROTC, or AFROTC.

Same goes for PSU. Being an engineering major, we get very very little that counts towards credits - I get all of 3 credits towards electives, and 3 that count towards phys. ed. credits (6 total). The one thing I envy about non STEM majors, is that they get a boatload of elective credits. I was doing a comparison between engineering and things like history and art majors ... they get so many elective credits (10+ credits) ... whereas engineers get 3 max. However ... it does count towards GPA - which is more what I care about than it counting for credits.

My DS is in the same position. As a stem major, he has other required electives. He will finish with 18 uncounted credits of MS/MS History class. Due to SMP, he stepped in beginning with MSII-B, or he would have had even more. As an MSIV, he will be paying $1,000/per semester over limit penalty due to these credits.
On the side note, I believe he may qualify for a minor in Military Studies at his school.

Similar to above, South Carolina offers credit for all ROTC academic classes and PT. However there is no credit for lab, which chews up 3 hours per week. As a History major DS uses them towards his electives, so it depends on how many hours you can spend on electives as to whether it will all count towards your degree. Additionally, minors are offered for Army, Navy, and Air Force academic courses... Marines are out of luck though. So these can be used to complete the requirement for a minor.

AROTC credit

AU 1 credit, counted as an elective.

I'm pretty sure each of the Cal State Univesities give you one unit for the MSI and MSII courses and 2 unit hours for MSIII and MSIV classes each semester. (Sac State did / does.) They are considered liberal arts electives.

University of Alabama does count son's Army ROTC credits as elective hours. However, as with the previous posters, they are of little benefit to him as an Engineering major. He currently has 104 hours, and still has four full semesters to go! UA does count 4 (as I recall) of the ROTC classes toward a minor in Leadership and Civic Engagement, should the cadet choose to pursue it.

At James Madison University, they allow you to count ROTC credits to earn a minor in Military Leadership. They also count as elective credits. Anyone can take the classes, you don't have to be a cadet and fully enrolled in the program, they are just like every other elective class. I had a couple seniors in my MSI class just because they needed credits to graduate and thought the class sounded cool. I'm pretty lucky, as a history major I have to take 35 elective credits, and ROTC ends up being 39, so I only have 4 extra credits left over when I graduate.

Wheaton College (IL)
2 Units/semester Freshman & Sophomore Year
4 Units/semester Junior and Senior Year

If you do the required Military History class, you graduate with a certificate of Military Science.

DS's school counts all MILS courses (labs included)

As a MSI- courses are one credit, MSII, courses are 2 credits, MSIII 3 credits, MSIV courses are 4 credits.

So this semester as an MSI, DS earned 1 credit for class and 1 credit for PT lab.

As a STEM major, one MILS class can count towards a humanities elective. No others will count toward his major. Once DS completes ROTC courses, he will earn a minor in Leadership and Development.
