What is the general process for getting a flight slot in the USMC? At USAFA, its all based mostly on class rank. Is the USMC the same?

I'm not too keen on the inner workings of the USMC, but I believe one's actual "job" as an officer (don't know how jarheads refer to it) is determined by their OML rank at the end of OCS, and the available positions granted to your individual OCS class.

^ Nice try but no.

NROTC MIDN take the ASTB (and a flight physical?) and submit a package to become air contracts while still in college. Obviously, it's contingent on them to pass Bulldog and graduate.
Otherwise, they compete as ground contracts with peers from OCS and USNA at The Basic School for their MOS. Competitive air contracts are occaisionally available at TBS, but the best course of action is for NROTC guys to get them at school before they commission.

Thanks Hurricane12, I thought thats what I had heard. What year are they submitting packages? Jr., Sr.?

Potentially you can get a slot as early as sophomore year. You take the ASTB and based on your scores you might be guaranteed a slot. I don't think hit has to occur that early though. This is second hand info through my DS who is not interested in aviation, although he was at one time so he explored it a little bit anyway.

Wow....I really like this system of pre-determining who becomes aviators. Just makes alot of sense.

Well, when I say a guaranteed slot, I think I really mean you're guaranteed a crack at it. Many will flunk out I'm sure.

An opportunity to fail is all we ask for. What we donwith it is entirely up to the person:)

Agreed! Just wanted to make sure it was clear.

One thing you may want to research is if they also give points for selection if you have any flight hrs or a PPL. For AFROTC, when they take the TBAS (their test version), if they show their flight log they get extra points added to their score.

If they have a PPL than they get a waiver for the flight school prior to UPT known as IFS (Initial Flight Screening). The school is onlya month long, but still they have a 20% or more washout rate.

For our DS every Xmas/birthday we gave him flight hrs. It was worth it because he felt more confident at IFS than some of his peers. Plus, he knew that flying is more than jumping into the cockpit like you would with a car. It meant time planning the flight, kicking the tires, etc., IOWs it was a more realistic view than what they see on Top Gun or the military channel regarding that career path.
~ Our DS was home for Xmas and was talking to his Dad {Bullet} about how he gets it now what he was telling him...for every minute he flies, he spends 2-3 minutes briefing/de-briefing and 2-3 minutes mission planning. IOWs for a 2 hr. mission it is 8-10 hrs. doing other things for the flight.
