Just watched an industry copy of "Lone Survivor" tonight. It stayed pretty much to the book. The book and movie both left me shaking. If you get a chance I encourage you to read "Lone Survivor" and "Seal of Honor". The movie is one I'll own.

Thanks tug. I've been looking forward to the movie for months and hope to see it with DS Jan. 10 before he returns to school and his NROTC unit the next day. I've read both books and broke down sobbing through each. My one concern about the movie is/was their giving Murphy his due, what with Lutrell being the main character and all. Glad to hear your report that they stuck pretty close to the book. I have no doubt I will also own it.
 
Saw the movie with DS on Christmas Day - intense doesn't even begin to describe the feeling you get down into your core. I agree that it stuck pretty close to the book other than a little artistic license near the end. I thought they might flash to Texas and Marcus's family with other team members.

FYI - The movie opened in NYC in one theater - needless to say I think all show times sold out.
 
I was shocked...

I was shocked by one scene in the movie that surprised me they had shown. Without giving it away, after you've seen the movie we can discuss it. I think Marcus being in the movie probably had the directors and script writer hold true to their experience.

I'm sure you're right about Marcus' participation. Saw a Charlie Rose interview recently with him, Mark Wahlberg, and Peter Berg (director and writer along with Marcus). Excellent interview although Marcus doesn't really open up until the end (I feel). Nevertheless, it's not like the story needed much (any?) work to make it into a terrific (action) film.

Can you tell me why it is rated R? Is it gory? I can handle that just wonder so I can convince my dad to take me.

It is pretty gory, many people get shot...including someone being shot in the head. There is a lot of blood. It probably received it's R rating from the amount of violence and shooting. But even with all the violence, blood, etc. it is an extremely inspiring movie and worth seeing.
 
Suggest you have your dad read the book. Doing so will make clear why the movie would be rated R and he can make his decision based on that.

And I would add it's a very fast read. Hard to put the book down.

Got to see a matinee on a rainy afternoon here in NC. Was hoping to see it with DS before he returns to college tomorrow AM but it's his girlfriend's birthday so you can guess how that worked out. Very, very good movie. Not fun. Not entertaining. But an excellent movie that every American adult should see.

Was a little surprised to see Marcus in a few scenes but since I was looking for him I couldn't really have been too surprised. I think I was expecting to see more of a minor cameo than what was actually there. They did stick pretty close to the book and the changes were more to improve the audience's connections with some characters rather than "Hollywood up" the movie. Highly recommended.

I wish they had made it a few years ago when it might perhaps have had more impact on events. Also, any concerns I had about Murphy not getting his due, so to speak, were entirely unfounded.
 
Great movie- my DS (finally got the acronym down) school was asked to escort some of the family members of lost navy seals to a screening of the movie. It made seeing more meaningful. I was lucky enough to watch it at that time as we'll. It was incredibly done. Sharing it with some of the family members, wives, other military folks made it an event we will never forget. GREAT movie go see it-
 
Saw the movie yesterday. Very powerful. Truly speaks to the bond that forms between brothers-in-arms.

Saw it with my DS and served as a launching point for a conversation regarding leadership style, tactics, law of war, etc. Wouldn't be surprised if this becomes a mandatory book for ROTC classes for use in leadership discussions.
 
I haven't read the book yet, but know the timeline. The movie was pretty powerful. This isn't a "USA! Rah! Rah!" war movie. I think it does very well in speaking to the devotion of people to their brothers in arms and principles.





Minor point, but the rescue was not historically accurate.

You are of course correct about the rescue. However I thought it appropriately conveyed the danger Lutrell and the villagers were in within the time allotted. Good enough for me (and Hollywood).
