best schools for ROTC scholarships

I won an AROTC scholarship and have accepted it to Boston University, but it is still transferrable. There are some schools that reciprocate your ROTC scholarship by paying room and board as well. Does anyone know of some of these schools? For example, Drexel is one of them.

LOTS of schools cover room and board if you're on an Army scholarship. There's a list of them on the sticky "Room and Board" at the top of this forum.

I wouldn't necessarily use that post - it dates past several years ago, a lot has changed. I know that there are some schools that no longer offer free R&B any more. It's best for the OP to ask admissions themself.

Also OP - just because it is transferable DOESN'T mean that it will be transferable. It's not really that easy to just pick up a scholarship and move it elsewhere. You see, you have to consider both the losing Battalion and the gaining Battalion. And, if the gaining Battalion is in a different Brigade (geographic region) than the losing Brigade, things get even trickier.

I think I remember from last year's graduating class ... it was Clarkson (I think, not 100% sure) that said originally all transfer requests were denied, but then CC realized that a decent chunk of the scholarship winners were awarded schools, that for one reason or another, didn't/couldn't attend, and CC ultimately approved transfers.

And with the way budgets are being cut, who knows how much CC has. So, just be aware of placing your money on transfers.

Also - some schools have crosstown agreements with other schools; in other words some schools serve as a host battalion for another school. In Drexel's case, it is a crosstown school ... for St. Joe's I think. This may not be a big of an issue since they are fairly close to one another, but in other schools - distances may be a factor. IE: Getting up 1 hour earlier than everyone else to avoid traffic and make it to the host school for PT in the morning, and then doing the same for class/Lab etc.

Since we are going down this path, the student should contact the bursar, not admissions.

I am 1000% in agreement with Thompson about transferring the scholarship.

I will also add one more thing regarding transferring. They do not open up this option until April. You may not have an answer until May. Most colleges require deposits, which maybe non-refundable in the same time frame. The question becomes do you drop 2 deposits? 1 for the ROTC scholarship you received, and 1 for the one you want to transfer?
~ Call the bursar to see if it is refundable
~ Talk to the folks to see if they can swing 2 deposits. For our kids the lowest deposit was300, the highest was 500. I love my kids, but with 2 in college every yr for the past 4 yrs. 1000 would hurt our wallet.

I would also say AROTC allows the choice between tuition and R&B, please read the threads carefully because there are tax implications if use the scholarship for R&B. Again something that you need to discuss with the folks.

Marquette gives each ROTC kid on scholarship $28,000 (7k a year) for living expenses, food, etc.

I got an AROTC offer to go to Marquette.... and yet decided say no, and accepted the scholarship to another school. To this day, my biggest regret was turning down Marquette. I still question what the hell I was thinking.

Go for Northeastern University! The best battalion in Boston! They also give around $8200 a year for room and board for being on scholarship. Boston College, which is in the same battalion, gives free room and board all 4 years.

Northeastern is ranked as one of the top AROTC battalions, and they have been very helpful and accommodating to me.

The ones I know and have spoken with are Norwich, Rennsselaer Poly Tech and Jacksonville University. Also, if you are researching, understand there is a "published" cost to attend a college and then the "what they will offer" cost. For example, Mt St Marys (MD) is roughly $46k annual (including room and board). They are offering a $20,000 annual scholarship (in other words $80,000 off four years) because DS has over 1100 SAT with a 3.5 GPA. It brought the price annually from $46,000 down to $26,000. Additionally, Washington College (MD) offered a $16,000 annual scholarship to him. Just FYI.
