My DD has a LOA from a while ago and her nomination to USNA just got updated on 12/20. When should she expect her official appointment to come? Thanks!

My DS nomination was uploaded to portal as of NOV 15 and he got his BFE in the mail on NOV 29.

Hope this helps!:thumb:

Sorry, forgot to mention , his LOA came in August

For our DS, his LOA came in September. The nomination was updated to portal on 12/16 and the BFE with the offer for appointment arrived on 12/23 (it was dated 12/19).

Ok I made an account just to ask this question

How is it that every other thread on this board contains a post where someones son or daughter got a letter of assurance? The Academy's website states that very few actually receive this letter.

What in blazes does DS and DD stand for? Direct Son/Daughter??

Also, it seems like everyone on this site worked with the pope to end starvation, or may as well have, based on how many ECA's and volunteer gigs you guys have done. If you are telling the truth, it seems like I may have a tough time getting in...

This website is not representative of every district in the US but there are some amazing candidates (and their parents) here. LOA's do still go out and I would not assume that the proportions of LOA's on this site are indicative of the whole country.

DS = dear son
DD = dear daughter

there is an acronym list in the stickies somewhere....it's helpful when you first get here.

I doubt anyone on this site has lied about their ECA's. Honor is held above all other traits in the Service Academies. You should be careful with throwing out accusations.

It's not a matter of the number of ECAs. A few years ago, a successful candidate only did a single sport (nothing else) b/c he had to help raise his family.

Every situation is different. USNA is basically looking to see that you are willing to do things -- and can handle doing them time wise, etc. -- other than school work. USNA involves much more than academics and if it takes all of your time and energy to succeed in the classroom, you may not be able to handle the rigors of a SA. USNA is also looking for well-rounded individuals.

Finally, it's better to focus on a few ECAs -- do them for 3-4 years, take leadership positions, etc. than simply to belong to a bunch. For example, when someone tells me he/she is president of a club, I ask what the person does in that role. To me, that's more important than simply having a title.

For openers, you could lose the attitude. and the smugness. There are some incredible people on this site who have done much in their young lives and not necessarily to just enhance their resume for an SA appointment but to make actual contributions to their communities...the Vatican not withstanding.

As for LOA's, and has been noted, while this forum does not represent the country as a whole, they are not passed out like so many pennies in a jar. In fact, they number in the hundreds, not the thousands.

You want to position yourself to get in when it comes to EC's? Look at your own involvement in the ones you've chosen, not for quantity but for quality, and what you're doing in those.

Nomination is dated November 26th, 2013.

Offer of Appointment is dated December 5th, 2013.

Nine days is pretty quick!

If you are able to give justifiable reasons for what you spend your spare time doing, you should be fine. Just because volunteering seems the norm doesn't mean that that is the only way of getting in. They are looking for people who can manage their time well, as good time management skills are a must for the rigorous scheduling Midshipmen are subject to at the Academy.

Quick question -
My app is complete as of today (1/6). I am a primary nom, and all other components (interview, nom, dodmerb) are completed and uploaded.

Any estimate on how long a decision would take? Nine days is pretty appealing!!

Thank you folks!

My older daughter received 3Q and 2 nominations by Dec 7 2010. She did not receive the offer of appointment until March 30 2011.

We learned first hand that appointments are very rare and show up when they show up. The point is A+B+C does not equal appointment. Some 3Q never receive an offer of apt - some receive right away.

This is NOT a linear process and the wait is tough on everyone!

Good luck - for us parents it is important to believe they all end up where they were meant to be!

(My son currently has LOA and nom - but waiting on a medical waiver - which may or may not come...and there is no time period for any of this! - Hang in there!)

The processes -- and timelines -- vary quite a bit depending on which of the following groups you're in.

If you have an LOA and a nom OR are a principal nominee -- and assuming you're 3 Q'ed -- there is typically a very short timeframe b/t completing the last element and receiving your appointment. The reason is that there is no real "decision" to make so, once everything is complete and documented, the appointment certificate is quickly forthcoming.

The overwhelming majority of 3 Q'ed candidates with noms are NOT in the above categories. They do not have an LOA and their nom is competitive (not principal). These candidates first compete against their slates and, if they don't "win" their slate, go into the national pool. The same holds true for Presidential nominees without LOAs.

Slates and completed packages aren't due until Jan. 31. Once everything is in, USNA must evaluate each slate, choose the appointee, and then evaluate the national pool and choose more appointees. This process takes the better part of February. Thus, most candidates who are on this track hear in March. Some may hear earlier and some later (early April). But it's this "decision making" that takes the time. And there's really no way to predict how long it will take for any given candidate. USNA commits to notifying all candidates of their status by April 15.

One additional question - is there a means of being notified you are triple qualified? I have received confirmation of medical qualification, and feel both my grades and CFA would qualify. Should I receive some sort of notification?

Thanks!

DS also had a Principal Nom, but no LOA -- we just had to assume he was 3Q'd and wait - I do not believe that there is any notification. DS's portal showed the Nom rc'vd mid-November but did not receive his BFE until Dec. 24. So, it was about 5-6 week's wait for him. I have no idea the hows & whys of the timing, but just wanted you to be aware that it may take a bit longer in case you do not receive it soon.

Thank you! My principal nom was uploaded December 3, and all my app components were uploaded as of January 6. So hopefully I'll find out soon. Thank you though!
