Hello again everyone,
I just got done my NROTC scholarship interview and I thought it went pretty well. I would just like to know a few things, 1) How long will it take for me to notified if I did/didn't get the scholarship? 2) How many people received the scholarship last year and how many total applied? and 3) What are the average stats for the people who get the scholarship? 1400+ SAT, 4.0, class president? Thanks alot everyone!

I submitted my application back in August and still not heard yet. The commanding officer told me that I should be hearing in the next month though.

my son had his package sent to Pensacola on Labor Day and he still has not heard anything.

My daughter's package was complete in late August and she has not heard anything yet.

To answer your first question, I applied back in August and heard back around the 2nd of December. I don't know how long it will take for you to get boarded and be decided on but it could take a while. I can't speak for number two but as far as my stats, I had a 1360 SAT, 4.3 GPA, Valedictorian, Captain of Numerous teams, and President of some school clubs.

Have your DS and DD checked their portals under status? Do they know if the app has been boarded? They should contact their PMS Officer at their top listed school to find out.

If you receive a scholarship, you will of course be notified. Usually in about 2-3 weeks from the time of the board but sometimes there are snags. If you hear nothing then you have been reboarded. You will not hear a final negative reply until early April. That's our experience anyway. Be working on plans B, C, D, and E in the meantime. Also, its time to be starting those FAFSA applications... that will keep you and the folks busy for a while. Hang tough.

In Time....

nstovallkurtz,

My DS had his Naval Academy and NROTC (tier 1 - EE) package completed and submitted by late June. He along with the many others have been waiting for a while now.

Take kinnem's guidance and start working on your B, C, D, and E plan as well as FAFSA your CSS profile (if needed - private schools.) To add get rolling on your scholarship applications. Our DS was sick for the last 6 days, he sat in bed writing so many essays he can now publish a book.

It will not really help but my DS stats are in brief: ACT M-32 & V-31, his NROTC page show this as a SAT = M-720 & V=-700. Capt & co-capt (2 diff. teams), NHS, Varsity club, 200+ hrs. of community and school service, top 15% of class, attended NASS, etc.etc.etc. Our DS has been accepted to his three top NROTC school choices, as well as his "C & D" plan schools. Again he as well as many others still wait to hear.

Even I as a parent have reached out to get the "parental calming be patient guidance.":smile: It is painful but as I have been told by next year at this time it will be nothing but a distant memory.

All this goes back to kinnem point of getting the other things that need to be done...done.

In the end all the very best to you and all the candidates that have applied.

Welcome to the waiting pool!

as FAFSA your CSS profile (if needed - private schools.)

Can you tell me what the CSS profile is? I filled out FAFSA on Jan 2nd and it was processed on Jan 3rd (of course we aren't eligible for anything....apparently the fed gov knows how to get blood from a rock!)

College Board

The CSS profile has to be completed off of college board... It also comes at a cost, go figure. The CSS was required for BU and looking through the list every school appeared to be private. The privates require both the CSS and FAFSA, no clue why they are almost identical.

Cheers...

For the OP I would suggest looking on the ROTC forums on this site. You will find more results regarding your questions over there.

Kind of surprised the mods have not moved this thread already since it is about NROTC not USNA.

I will say this....hurry up and wait is commonly known as the military's motto.

This will be your life as long as you are in the military.
~Hurry up and get your paperwork in by X date, now wait several months until we tell you the outcome.

I will also point out that statistically HSSP recipients are @ 18% of all that apply. About the same chance as getting an appointment. Scholarship recipients as freshmen are the minority in ROTC.

Most SA applicants will apply for ROTC scholarships as their plan B. The big difference is SAs start off geocentric (MOC slates) and than go to the national pool. ROTC is national from start to finish. NROTC also places your intended major into the equation. You could have 1500 SAT, 3.6 cgpa, 9 APs, but because you said you want to major in govt., the 1400 SAT, 3.4cgpa, 7 AP candidate gets the scholarship since they want to major in Aeronautical engineering. 85% of NROTC scholarships go STEM.

Finally, regarding FAFSA, many schools require it for needs based decisions. FAFSA may say you only equal for 5500 loan, but the school may decide based on your FAFSA that you qualify for college specific grants/loans. Colleges typically tell you to have it done by x date to be eligible for their needs based grants.

Don't get me started on this issue ... it is my pet peeve. IE. VT has an endowment of 500 MN, but yet every yr. we have seen our DD's tuition rise by @10%. DS1 went OOS. He entered with the cost of 28K, 4 years later the cost to attend was 41K OOS. If you really want to have your cranium explode. Harvard's endowment is so large that they could use just the interest off their endowment to pay every single students tuition for all 4 yrs. Their endowment is in the BNs. Yes, Billions.
~~~ Who is really to blame for college costs?
~ US as parents! It is simple economics. As long as we are willing to pay the cost, including taking tens of thousands in student loans, colleges will continue to increase the cost to attend. The minute we say it isn't worth the debt, will be when they stop increasing the price.
Off my soap box....now if they would only go public and trade on the DOW, my opinion would change....think about it....buy stock in Harvard knowing they have BNs in equity and get more than 5x cost of living adjustment per yr. with more demand than they can supply, wouldn't you invest in them too?
