I did my interview for AFROTC this past Friday, and on Tuesday, I received this email:

"nolifepilot,

I am pleased to inform you that we would like to offer you an AFROTC Det 145 scholarship. The scholarship is being offered without you having to meet a scholarship board and is contingent upon you attending Florida State University and participating in the AFROTC program. The scholarship will be a Type 1 scholarship and cover tuition, provide a book allowance, and a monthly stipend.

I understand Northeastern University is your #1 choice and you are also awaiting word from the United States Air Force Academy (USAFA). If you would prefer to not take this offer and meet the scholarship board, which leaves open your chances of getting offered an AFROTC scholarship from HQ AFROTC and attending Northeastern, I understand. If you accept our offer and are later accepted into the USAFA, you can still attend the USAFA. I understand you will likely need to talk this over with your parents. Please let me know if you would like to accept this offer no later than 30 Jan."

I am VERY excited to hear back so quickly, and with such great news!! I live about 15 minutes from FSU, and it's currently a backup school to USAFA (my first choice) and Northeastern (my second choice). Now it would be GREAT to accept this offer, especially combined with my other scholarships, it would take care of absolutely everything money wise. But I don't really want to go to FSU... I wouldn't mind it horribly, but I just really can't see myself attending FSU.

So my question is: would it be in my best interests to decline the offer at this point in time? Or should I suck it up and take advantage of this opportunity? I feel that if the detachment were to offer me a type 1 scholarship without sending my application to the national board, that this could mean that I could potentially be offered a type 1 to a school I'd be interested in attending (Northeastern). Also, since the tuition cost for attending FSU would be in-state for me, wouldn't a type 2 or 7 cover the cost of attending just as effectively? So if I were to be awarded any scholarship type by AFROTC HQ, it would be just as good as this offer?

Thanks!

Not the word I highlighted in your post above.

This is a conversation you should have with Mom and Dad and factors to consider are not getting any other AFROTC scholarship, not getting a type 1 scholarship, and the potential of not being accepted at Northeastern. Unless there is some details you haven't provided in your post, these are all ifs. And I didn't even get to family finances yet.

That being said, if you are unhappy at the college you attend you will certainly not do as well as you might. Not saying you wouldn't be successful but being at a school you love makes a big difference in your performance there.

You, Mom and Dad have some pondering to do... and this is a family decision.
