Just some updates from MAJ Turner, SE RC, from a cold, wind swept, snowy West Point:
*The Portal being updated was a simple software update conducted by the computer support staff (he chuckled, when he read all the great theories on why it was down)
*The first wave of 300+ appointments did go out last week. These were clear vacancy winners, Principal NOMs, and others that were pretty much assured a spot. They have until April 15th to make a decision.
*Looks like next wave will "probably" not be until late February. They to will have until April 15th to make a decision.
*"If you accept admission to another Academy, please drop your application to any other Academy. Any event/condition that will knock you out of an Academy with knock you out of all of them." Bad form once you've accepted and not a Plan B.
*"If you are sitting here, in front of me, for an overnight visit, and your packet is complete, you are probably 3Q, and probably on the right path to your appointment" I may have screwed up the quote, but it's how I remember it. If not, I'm sure I will be hearing from someone ;-)
*"I sent out over 25,000 emails last year" Basically, if he was not responding to an email from someone or needing some information, don't be surprised that you don't hear from your RC
*"I am concentrating on the seniors now. I will not turn my attention to juniors until after R Day" He does have to do SLE slotting and respond to you juniors, but it is low on the list.
*It frustrates him about misinformation and speculation on the Forums. He is not a member of a Forum, but has sent PMs to people to correct their statements.
*@1400 appointment offers will be made, with an expected class of under 1200
*The Academy is at over 4,500 strength versus the 4,400 authorized by law.
*We ask the Admissions Team to post the approved boots/shoes in the FAQ section of their website
Overall, a great visit so far. I hope tomorrow is not a snow day, so that my DD can have a one on one with MAJ Turner. Cheers

Thanks very much for the info. The April 15 date is nice to see for those who are looking at multiple Academies. We were under the impression that he had to make a decision by March 1.

My DS and I will be headed to West Point in late February for one of the overnight visits. He is very much looking forward to it.:thumb:

Please post a link when the boots/shoes are approved. I didn't see anything about it on the FAQ's.

This is interesting. DS's letter from his Senator listed him as a "competitive alternate," so we were under the impression someone else was given a Principal nomination. Goes to show how complicated this process is.

Other Info

A few updates from the one on one with the RC.
*No ROTC or SDVET appointments were given so far
*He did not have ANY SDVET appointments last year. It sounds like a great bucket to be in! "May" hear something after 31JAN about these appointments.
*Our MOC has two slots and there are at least two people higher than my DD, but she is the only person from her district that is fully qualified.
*My DD should not be bubble rapped yet, but she is looking good
*ROTC is an overloaded bucket. If it your only NOM - U had better be a star
*VA is VERY competitive. FL not so much (my DD noticed a lot of VA Thomas Jefferson (TJ) grads - best HS in the Nation in my view)
*Even the Admissions dpt is not always sure what NOM is actually going to be used for a particular candidate until the day after R Day.
*01MAR - the scores are set, then they can get in the weeds and make most of the appointments
*He had 3 declinations and already issued 2 appointments in their place. Other Academies. He knows of people who have accepted to other Academies, but he still has to make offers if they meet the criteria.

Not sure this is phrased the best, I am sure any kid in the SDVET bucket would prefer to have their parent with them than have a slot to a SA.

My DS is on AoG scholarship at MMI right now. He has earned great grades and has an impeccable record at MMI. He has an ROTC nom and has yet to receive a local Nom because NJ district 2 has yet to announce nom's. So, he is worried because as of now his only nom is ROTC. Hopefully, he is one of those stars. MMI has a 100% success rate of acceptance over the past several years.

You will be surprised how alive and functional some VETs with 100% disability are.

My understanding is that AOG scholarship winners will get appointed upon successful completion of the prep program. The admissions office constantly switches nominations. So if you DS doesn't get any other nomination, he could get appointed using the ROTC nomination or Superintendent's nomination. Of course, if your DS ended getting appointed using ROTC nomination, the admissions office will have to shuffle the ROTC slate and so on.

Got it. I was unsure about the probability of him using the ROTC nom. I was under the impression that admissions will get him the nom one way or another. Would really be relieving to get an answer in the next few weeks. All of his AoG sponsored classmates have received their Noms. Jersey 2nd waits so long.

SDVETll

Actually was told a story of a upset candidate. Was not happy to lose SDVET NOM because dad was in remission from cancer. Lol

I'm 100% disabled by VA standards. It is good to have another bucket. Do sent make me more or less screwed up.

I'm kinda in the same bucket. I only have an ROTC nom and my congressman (NJ-05) has not notified me either. Someone from his staff emailed me and said I might not know until mid-February. It's so stressful waiting.

Stevewar2: Thank you for posting this briefing info, you've cited some interesting information. If there is anything different or updated when we go in a couple weeks, I will post as well.

On another note, you said:

*Our MOC has two slots and there are at least two people higher than my DD, but she is the only person from her district that is fully qualified.

It sounds like the odds are really in your DD's favor. I wish her the best of luck!

Also, isn't it interesting that for two slots, which could equate to a full two slates of ten nominees each, that she is the only one that is 3Q'd at this point? Do you know how many were put on the slate by your MOC, was it a full 10? And was she nominated to both slates?

AoG....

AoG is a "Golden Ticket". AoG will find a nom for you, but it is still conditional as you know. You must have high marks from your Prep School and not find any trouble before R-Day. You've heard it before, "The Appointment Is There For You To Lose!"

I think that of all the people above her - she was the only one 3Q so far. I think our slate was less than 20 and closer to six total. So everyone was put on both slates. Just guessing here.

MOC NOM

They have to tell WP by 31JAN14, so it should not be FEB before you know.

Hey Stevewar2, you seem to be getting a lot of information! lol. Is there anyway you can find out when the instructions to appointees will be sent out? All of the things posted to my portal say "Not yet available" in parentheses next to the items.

They usually have those instructions ready in February to coincide with the majority of the offers. The rest of the mailings will go out throughout the spring, usually one per month.
