Hey guys,
I'm really looking to get into volunteering, I've done a lot before but I've never gotten into one group or organization that I've stuck with, I'm only a Sophmore but I really like communtity service when I'm not doing school,or sports things. What are the best organizations you have heard of or done that are fot a good cause and can help me learn some things that could transfer for me to use later on, potentially at the USNA,

I also live in CT and my DS will be a part of the class of 2018. He volunteered for Special Olympics for 3 years ( it usually takes place in May), Person to Person ( it is in Darien) and he also volunteered for various road races helping with timing, giving out water and with registration . You can call your place of worship and they will help also.
If your user name is any indication of your location than you are in the Fairfield County area and Person to Person takes high school volunteers and is close by.

Volunteer in something you enjoy or something you can do with friends. Just like with work, if you volunteer at something you enjoy -- it's not a chore. Both my boys like sports -- so one coached middle school lacrosse, the other assisted with Special Olympics. They also volunteered at a local food pantry - coordinating shifts with friends when possible. What is happening in your community that interests you? A local museum? Music program? Park District?

Thank you, I'm interested in sports so I think I'll try to volunteer with the special Olympics and some road races that are coming up in my area, thank you so much for your help, go Navy!:smile:
 
@Sheaisland - Most all high schools will have a blood donation a couple times a year organized through the Red Cross. If you can volunteer or donate blood there that would be helpful in increasing your chances as a candidate. Did a lot of work with the Red Cross and even talked about donating blood in my essay. Worked out well.

My DS is in the Class of 2018 as well and he goes down to the elementary school and volunteered to be a homework helper after school. My son has lettered in 3 different varsity sports and still makes time to volunteer.

Thanks guys for your help once again, Aspiring_Midshipman, do you help out with the Red Cross or do you just donate blood? If you do help out how did you get in touch to be able to help out? I've written to a few organizations but all I've gotten back was to donate. And Batinhand1 did your son contact the principal of the elementary school? That's sounds like something interests me. Once again, thank you guys for your help!

Actually, in his case they called the HS and asked the principal for a couple people. It worked perfectly. I am sure if you ask the principal of your old elementary school, they would love to have you. Especially if they know you are trying to get into the Academy.
 
I wouldn't approach the idea of volunteering as something to enable you to 'check the box' on your application form. You should be interested in those things since you think you can contribute in a positive way to your school or community. You get points in your WCS for all of the various ECA's, sports and leadership activities you do while in h.s. There is really no one set formula of activities you need for admission.

There are many activities that you can volunteer in around our state. Working with your local church is an option (if you are religious), volunteering for tutoring or working at a daycare, working fairs, special olympics, working at soup kitchens is also I good way to spend your time!

@Sheaisland - I've worked with the Red Cross through my school's service organization. We go around the school and get people to sign up to donate blood, organize the time slots for when they'll donate, and direct the Red Cross as to when and where to set up the donation center. Donating blood personally is also very rewarding - give it a go. Hope this helps or gives some ideas. Glad to see you're focused on community service!

Here's yet another idea for you to consider. DS started last summer with just about 70 hours of misc. vol. hours. Needed a lot more for NHS and for academy app. so he found a Habitat for Humanity re-sale store close to home. He started to vol. and enjoyed it so much that he amassed over 150 hours just last summer!

In the process of working there, he met a retired USN retired Commander and an Admiral who also donate their time. What a bonus! He got to the point where even after he received his appointment a few weeks ago he's been going every weekend for 8 hours out of the sheer pleasure and satisfaction it gives him. He's finally got to the point where he understands the true nature of "giving back" and he's planning to continue his service right up until he needs to report to the USNA.

I never thought I'd get these many responses thank you all of you guys for being so helpful! It's awesome, I've always liked volunteering, but now I know resources to go to make me LOVE it, thanks once again, I'll most definitely look into habitat for humanity, Red Cross, church groups, helping elementary kids, and a bunch of other things, once again thanks you guys so much for your help, I really appreciate every bit of info:smile:
