Please excuse my lack of knowledge but what does BFE stand for?

and is the class of 2018 appointment thread for congressional appointments or actual appointment to the academy as in being accepted to the school?

1) BFE - Big Fat Envelope

2) Members of Congress nominate candidates to each academy, they do not appoint them. The appointment thread refers to candidates who have received a nomination and have been accepted (appointed) by the academy.

The class of 2018 appointment thread is for actual appointment with all types of nominations -- congressional, Presidential, JROTC/ROTC, etc.

why are the envelopes so fat? what material do they contain besides an acceptance letter?

There is a letter stating that you have been accepted , the appointment certificate, another letter asking you to accept or decline , a letter asking for your birth certificate, a form for you to give to the local police , and yet another letter discussing any changes in medical status, etc. It comes priority mail and is in a nice padded navy blue floder with the USNA seal on the front.
