FYI - 10 days ago DS (DodMERB qualified for AROTC and USMA) was bitten by our dog (late at night). We went to the ER because i was not sure if it needed to be stitched and I wanted him on an antibiotic ASAP. No stitches, but tetanus booster, and antibiotics given. Went for follow up with Dr a few days ago, and all is fine. Today he e-mailed the incident to the Helpdesk at DoDMERB. He got a reply back in about half an hour! Pretty impressive. Anyhow - as we thought - no problem with his Q status!

Question: Would oral surgery have an impact on my qualified status? I'm supposed to ge my wisdom teeth taken out in June, but I REALLY don't want to risk being DQed. Advice?

I can't speak for anyone else, I can only inform you of my experience. I had all four wisdom teeth surgically removed about 10 months before my medical exam. I listed it on my application and was still given qualified status. I would assume that it is not a disqualification pending there are no side effects from the surgery and your mouth makes a full recovery (usually takes about a week for the healing to make some significant progress, was fully healed and pain-free in about a month), but this is just an assumption. I hope, if anything, my advice at least raised your spirits.
If your wisdom teeth need to come out, then they need to come out. Whether it is a risk for your qualified status or not, think about the significantly heightened risks you'll have later in life for several mouth and gum diseases as a result of overcrowding due to your wisdom teeth. If a BGO/ALO/MALO/any other liaison officer does not comment on this, I would PM some of them and ask them about this. Again, it was not an issue for me, and I would hope that DoDMERB wouldn't see it as an issue for you. Best of luck.

There is no way I would wait until June to have your Wisdom teeth taken out and then plan on reporting in July. I would absolutely do it as soon as possible to insure a full recovery and if there are any complications, you have time to deal with it now vs. then. Before you do anything, though, take the advice to call prior to doing it.

Agreed. It can take up to a month (sometimes longer) for your mouth to heal. Considering that I barely wanted to get out of bed other than the first day after my surgery (I made myself get up and have a good day - it was my birthday, after all), I KNOW that I would not want to go through BCT while in pain and still recovering. SaH, talk to your orthodontist/dentist/oral surgeon/whoever recommended that you get them removed about possibly scheduling an earlier date.

We "forced" DS to get them extracted (torn out?) last week.
He is currently experiencing minor dental discomfort. You would think some local barber tore them out with a rusty pair of pliers after a shot of bourbon.
Offered him a can of suck it up....
Seriously, it is not "fun" but it is necessary. Better now than having them erupt on a ship in the middle of nowhere. I am also not wasting all the $$$ we handed over to the orthodontist.
