Hi, I was offered a CLS type 1 afrotc scholarship for a private school. The only question I have, is how does scheduling work for cross town schools work? The thing I'm most concerned about is the fact that the det's school starts in mid august while my school wouldn't start till late September. The det's school asl so runs semesters while my school runs quarters. Has anybody else had this problem, and if so, how did it work out?

Speak with the cadre at your school. They have obviously already mastered this and can provide you with all the details.

I agree with kinnem, talk to them. They may tell you that since you are on scholarship you need to come in to take the PFT on a certain date in August for scholarship activation purposes.
Since you are crosstown, make sure you choose wisely with class selection times. Many kids that do the school visit don't show up at the campus at 8 a.m and may not remember to put commuter traffic into the equation. Our DS's det was the host college, and one of the cross was 20 miles away. At 10 a.m. it takes 20 mins., but between 6-9 a.m it easily takes 45 mins. That means the 8 a.m class for the host cadet is doable, but not for the cross town. Also place this into the equation for LLAB schedule.

cross town concerns
When our DS was applying for NROTC scholarship he picked all host schools, we were concerned about commuting. Now that he is in an AROTC battalion and cross-town, we realized that the wheel does not need to be re-invented. There probably is not a cross-town concern that cadre or cadets have not encountered, and generally speaking, it's not that difficult. Talk to cadre, talk to other cadets. DS' battalion has MSIIIs and IVs car pool, it is assigned to a III every semester to arrange for cross-town schools and it is a simple leadership opportunity. Generally speaking I don't think it's that big a deal, and I might add that of the 4 schools in DS' battalion the only one not easily accessible by Metro is the host college, yet somehow they manage. Like many things that first year of college, they'll figure it out. Bigger fish to fry.

So, at my det there are many cross-town students. They aren't required to come to AFROTC events when their school isn't in session. Otherwise everything is normal. Sometimes cadets carpool with each other. I know one cadet who goes to a school 40-45 min away. She's pretty busy driving everywhere, but she makes it to all required AFROTC activities and even more. The other complication from being a cross-town cadet is registering for classes - you've got to make sure you're registered for AS classes at your host school. Anyway, once you get there, talk to your det. They have seen this before and have their own policies for cross-town cadets. Oh, my school runs quarters, and other schools run semesters but the only thing different is registering for AS classes (every quarter for cross-towns instead of every semester like their schools).
