I know it's maybe a bit early to start with the "what should I bring to Beast" questions and lists, but DS has his appt and the grandparents are already asking about graduation gifts. I've told them the possibilities besides money are few, since he won't be taking/needing much. However, I've seen headlamp and flashlight come up a few times and wonder if anyone with direct knowledge -- ie. you've either been through Beast recently, or had a daughter or so who has, could weigh in on whether or not one of these items would be helpful to have? I've seen both "I really wish I had brought one..." and "I don't know why anyone would bring one..."

My cadet took one to CBT and used it tons! Make sure you get one with the "red" light option. They can study their "knowledge" without disturbing others around them that are trying to sleep.

Also, I wasn't clear in my previous post....he took the headlamp. I believe it was about $25. You can purchase at any sporting goods store.

If he won't use it during Beast (and depending on his cadre, he may not be allowed to keep it), he'll probably still want it for field training later on down the road.

Big Bear - Did you have it for Beast and/or would recommend bringing one?

I brought it to beast and used it almost every day. I also used it during the school year, at Buckner, and at some other summer training opportunities.

I brought a headlamp (I think it was around $20) for beast and found it really helpful. We were issued flashlights but it was nice to have both hands free at night. The little red light flip down cover is an absolute must though! :)

For what it is worth, my DS said that he used his headlight (with a red filter) a lot during beast.
