Do you have to be 3Q'd to received an appointment? I haven't been able to find an answer to this and was wondering if any of you may know.

Yes, if you are not qualified academically, physically and medically, you will not receive an appointment. If you are not qualified academically, you may receive an offer to the prep school.

You must be found academically, physically and medically qualified PLUS receive a nomination to be appointed to USNA.

And you may be 3Q with a nomination and still not receive an appointment.

Yes, that is correct...you could have all the qualifications and a nom and still not get an offer.

This is direct from the USNA Admissions Page, Steps for Admission #10.

"Approximately 2,000 candidates are found fully qualified (scholastic, medical, CFA, and have obtained a nomination) each year. Of that number, about 1,500 will receive appointments and approximately 1,200 become midshipmen."

how does a candidate "know" if he/she is academically qualified? I saw on some other thread that the candidate's MOC had that information from the academy - is that normally the case?

my DS is physically & med. qualified, and has a congressional nom.

I would like to know the answer to this as well. I'm physically and medically qualified and have my nomination but haven't received a formal letter from the Academy stating that I'm 3Q like I have from USMA.

USNA doesn't send such letters. Your RD is the official source for that information.

I know many of the candidates would love to know if they are 3Q. How does one obtain that information from the RD?

Good question.
That information is not supposed to be shared by RD's (AC's) or BGO's; but some do share it a bit. I guess it's just luck of the draw.
