I have already accepted my appointment to USMA. Looking through some material online, I found a breakdown of what cadets get paid, and what they have to pay. In total, cadets have to "pay" (technically deducted form their pay) about $29,000. I know that scholarships that don't specifically apply to tuition can be used, but I am having a terrible time finding any. Does anyone have any experience with this?

whoa, where'd you pull that $29,000 figure from? I thought the deposit was still $2,000

Why would anybody have to pay that much when it is free? I know there will be little costs here and there, but $29k sounds wrong. @bigbear, what kinds of things do we need to expect to pay for?

It was a total of all 4 years. Basically it took the base salary cadets receive and showed how much the cadet actually pockets, and the total amount that the cadet never sees is 29,000 over 4 years.

That is the exact chart. It's 27199 plus the 2000 initial deposit

Actually, the $2,000 is an offset to 4th class expenses per the note at the bottom of the page via the above link so not in addition to the $27,199:

"Initial deposit of $2,000 is used to offset the above expenses in the first year at the academy when approximately 44% of a cadet’s expenses occur."

USNA gives an interest free loan of $8,500 to Plebes to cover initial expenses and that gets deducted from their pay over 4 years. Not sure why USMA doesn't do something similar for the $2,000 deposit.

Pay

I believe Cadets now make @ 1/3 of what a 2LT makes under 2 years TIS (with yearly COLAs also). A little over $1,000 /month X @47 months = @$47,000 plus travel and per diem when authorized. Not bad for college. It is funny though that ROTC scholarships do pay for uniforms and books. ROTC usually only pays for tuition or room/board. Trade offs galore lol

My DD's school has insight into @30-40 scholarships (AFCEA, AUSA, American Legion, Ladies Clubs, school graduates, etc.) Many of them are for $1 - $4 K and can be used for anything. Ask your college advisor.

So does that cost come out of the paycheck or out of pocket?

$$$

Expenses come out of your Cadet account. Basically, you run a deficit for a bit. Each year, you will get more and more of your pay every month. Every so often, I think you can also "top off" your account and get excess out. If you have scholarships, U get more when you top off.

Cadet85, the initial $2,000 is paid up front prior to R-Day by you or your parents. All the rest of your expenses will come out of your cadet pay each month. As Stevewar2 commented earlier, once a year you will be able to take out any excess in your cadet account. Don't count on much your plebe year.

To give the Cadet more money each month. No accepted Candidate will be turned away for an inability to pay that money. It used to matter more when Cadets were paid less before they codified the 1/3 of a O-1's pay.

We get paid about $1000/month, of that, only $450 (for me as a cow) shows up in my banck account. The rest goes into your cadet account, which is used to pay for food, laundry, haircuts, season tickets for football, etc.

 yes, we are forced to pay for the tickets for the games we are forced to go to.

But, I mean that $29k. Should we prepare our parents for that or is that part of the cadet account takeaway?
