waiver process continues

Greetings all,

DS received a letter on his AFA portal this morning. It stated;

The Director, Department of Defense Medical Examination Review Board, has informed us that you are medically disqualified for admission to the Air Force Academy. We have requested a medical waiver on your behalf and should the request be granted, we will continue processing your application.

We are encouraged as the last letter in October stated a waiver would only be requested if he was deemed competitive. Don't know how much longer he'll be waiting at this point but thankful things are moving forward.
 
In the same boat. It's nice to hear the academy wants you, but in my case, it sucks to know that the only thing keeping you out is an old injury that is not limiting in any way. :thumbdown:
 
I received the exact same letter this morning in my portal. I just spoke to my counselor at the Academy and he said that the waiver process will override the Early Action process, so hopefully it'll be complete before then.

Does anyone know how quickly the waiver process goes? And what happens in it? How quickly can we expect to hear a response? My status for USAFA still says "Pending Waiver Submission/Review," will that change?

It can take anywhere from two weeks to six months for a waiver to process. I am going through the same thing. Patience is key. :cool:

Just spoke to my ALO, he said my package would be going before the board tomorrow and that I'd hear something next week about my status. He said there were two things that could happen if I was appointed:

-It'd be a conditional appointment until my waiver was granted, meaning I would be unofficially appointed until the results came back. If I was granted a waiver, then my official appointment would come through. If not, my appointment would be rescinded.

-A waiver would be received alongside my appointment.

I was DQ'd for "Cholosteatoma, history of." I had ear surgery when I was three to correct this and haven't experienced any hearing loss, so I remain very hopeful that my waiver will be granted!

Best of luck to you! I haven't been officially disqualified yet, but my ALO and myself know that I will need a waiver for my vision. It all depends on when DoDMERB comes back and tells me that I am disqualified so the waiver process can kick in.
 
question about your waiver request

Dear nolifepilot, can you share the outcome from your waiver request for history of cholesteatoma? Wishing you all the best
 
I received a letter this morning, February 7th, that USAFA had granted my waiver! I can post my time line here if anyone would like me to.

Medical Waiver

I received a disqualifying status on my medical exam on February 11, 2014 and am waiting to here from USAFA if I will be competitive enough to have a waiver requested. I have two nominations and qualified for Early Action, does any of this come into play for receiving a waiver? Does anyone have suggestions for if I should start seeing more doctors so I can provide more medical evidence for consideration for a waiver?

Here is the time frame for DS who got the request for waiver letter Dec 18-19. He received a notice from DoDMERB on Dec 30 with the remedial codes and instructions. He provided complete medical records the first of Jan. DS actually called at one point and was told to give it at least 30-45 days after remedial exam was received and sent for review which was Jan 13. He received a letter Feb 7 stating waiver was granted and will be "check on entry" should he receive an appointment.

Our DD was DQ'd (for Spondylolysis) on 10/1 and on 10/4 both USMA and USAFA requested a waiver. We sent in all of the requested materials and she was granted a waiver from USMA on 2/4 (almost exactly 120 days), but has not heard anything back yet from USAFA on whether the waiver is approved or denied.

Yes! 68 days after it was requested on his behalf! So very thankful.

This was for code 225 - history of any dislocation, subluxation, or instability of the shoulder.

So happy for you on the waiver! My DS is in the same waiver boat. That dreaded shoulder injury and surgery! Hoping to get the waiver from USMA. Fingers crossed, prayers said...daily, hourly, every minute!
