USNAPS?

My best friend applied to the Naval Academy with me.

He received a nomination to the naval academy, and in December, the academy requested that he send them his 7th semester grades. Is this a good sign or is it typical?

I don't know exactly but I think his ACT score is somewhere in the 23-25 range and his SAT scores are around the 1600s. His GPA is probably a 3.4, he averaged A's and B's throughout high school. He has a very good list of extracurriculars and did well on his candidate fitness test.

I realize his grades and scores a little below average for admittance into USNA, but is he competitive enough for USNAPS?

I have seen multiple candidates with ranging SAT scores from 1550-1780 get an appointment to NAPS. My Regional Commander for West Point told me "In order for a candidate to be considered for prep school, he or she can only be a academic risk in one area, meaning a section score below 560". Not sure on how it is with the Navy though.

NAPS??

As an official candidate for USNA, I have yet to receive a nomination, and therefore, am unable to be offered an appointment to USNA. However, I am still hoping to get into NAPS, and go from there. I don't know if I would be considered for NAPS, so here are my statistics.

GPA: 4.1898 (3.8 Unweighted)
Rank: 32/325 (9.8%)
SAT: 610 CR, 650 Math
Varsity Swim, Varsity Track
Freshmen-Senior Class Vice President
FBLA Secretary
Set Construction Head of Stage Crew
Honors Band (1st Chair French Horn) / Jazz Band (1st Chair Trumpet)
4 AP Classes (Macro, Micro, Calc AB, and English)

I never took physics, so would that be a red flag?? Could that also get me into NAPS considering my stats and ECA's?

Can't speak to the red flag, but a lack of taking Physics will not get you into NAPS.

I don't think your gpa/SAT/rank are low enough to qualify for NAPS. Those appear to be competitive for being qualified academically.

Are you in a competitive state/district? Did you apply to all four nominations available to you? Just wondering why you didn't get a nom.

My DS is the same boat
High GPA 4.25 weighted, currently A+ in calculus II
Class rank 24 of 325
SAT 720 Math 550 CR
No nominations in a VERY competitive state, Maryland.

I am hoping that his low CR score will help keep him in the running for NAPS, he is still waiting to hear about NROTC, but he stated he would take NAPS if he was so fortunate to be offered both.

Any thoughts?

I am in NJ 12th district - very competitive. Will my scores and current academic courseload pass me over NAPS?

I'm not in Admissions so I can't tell you yes or no, but my understanding is that your current stats (GPA: 4.1898 (3.8 Unweighted); Rank: 32/325 (9.8%); SAT: 610 CR, 650 Math plus your AP classes) would make you academically qualified which means you would not be eligible for NAPS. Any chance you are being recruited for a sport? Or have another hook (URM, female...)?

I know being in a very competitive district is frustrating as your stats are good. Bottom line is if you don't have a nomination and are 3Q, you will not get an appointment. Hang in there -- until you get the TWE you are still in the race.

Make sure you are working on Plans B, C, D.....!

How many nominations did you apply for? It can't be said enough that everyone should apply for EVERY nomination they are eligible for, including the VP one even though it's a long shot. Why take the chance that you could come up short?

I think your DS has a chance for NAPS with the 550 CR, but I don't know the minimum score. Again, don't give up until you get the TWE. Glad to see he has a Plan B (NROTC) in place, and he should work on Plans C, D, E...in case the scholarship doesn't come through.

I got home to a very large packet and folder from the Naval Academy Dean of Admissions. I have received an appointment to USNAPS, dated February 06, 2014. :wow:

In case anyone is wondering, I have a GPA of approximately 3.62, my class rank is 2nd out of 9. My ACT scores were 34 English; 28 Math; 33 Reading; 34 Science; and 29 English/Writing. My SAT scores were 670 Math, 680 Writing, and 640 Reading. I know you don't need a nomination for USNAPS, but for informative purposes for readers of this post, I did not receive a nomination of any kind to USNA. While it is no doubt that I am happy as can be right now, I am curious as to what under-qualified me. Would you be USNAPS eligible if the highest-level math class you took was pre-calculus? My school only offers the basic four math classes (though I am taking a college algebra class online through UT Permian Basin). Or did one of my test scores or GPA not make the cut? Curiosity killed the cat, I know, but one has to wonder.

This was a much-welcomed surprise for me. My parents were clearly very excited about the packet as I had 16 missed calls and 8 texts from my mother when I checked my phone after school.

USNA is my second choice, so I will not be accepting or declining until I hear back from USAFA about my status, which works out fine because I have until May 1st to do so.

I would like to thank everyone on these forums for the previous guidance and continued guidance given to us candidates. I'd have been more lost than Christopher Columbus without this community. :shake:

One of the BGO's will hopefully be along shortly to give you authoritative guidance, but your scores appear to me to be, in all catergories, above the NAPS-level "risk" category that we read about here. Your Math is a little low for USNA averages, but it seems to me well above "risk" category (below 600/26). So, you appear to me, a layman, as a curious case.

I've read that they don't use NAPS to "park" people they want for a year when there isn't otherwise a nomination - unless they are recruited athletes. Maybe, they are worried about the quality of education you received in such a small remote school. But, the flip side is that your SAT/ACT scores would seem to refute that concern.

All of that said, CONGRATULATIONS from a fellow Texan!!! I don't think many people here realize how remote your location is out in Big Bend Country.

If you have interest in attending the USNA and can see yourself as a future USN/USMC officer, I would encourage you to take the offer if your USAFA plans don't materialize. With your scores, I think you will have no problem with the NAPS curriculum and a NAPS to USNA appointment is basically yours to lose.

Without being too personal, how is it that you go to high school in BBNP? Is one of your parents an employee of the park? I love it out there!

On this note, does anyone know when NAPSters report in? The letter just says July - it does offer a phone number for me to call if I have questions, but I think it's too late to call today. I only ask so that I can start planning my first couple of weeks of June. Thank you all!

That is encouraging news to those with high academics but seem to only lack a nomination. good luck in whatever you do!

According to previous posts, I believe that NAPS starts in late July around the 20th.
