Hello I am a junior that just ended first semester and I was hoping if someone that is well informed about the admission process in the USAFA could help me weigh myself in terms of if I can get into USAFA or not. (also the USMA and USNA)

First off
Cumulative GPA; 3.97
SAT; CR: 620, Math: 630, Writing: 720

I'm looking to retake the SAT to get a higher score.

Extracurricular Activities-
Sports:
-Freshman year I did JV Golf JV Swimming
-Sophomore year I did JV Golf
-Junior year I'm looking to do track and I will likely make varsity and receive a varsity letter in one or more events. And I will continue with track and cross country in the future from now.

My Parents have pushed me to rather just play violin and study (like the average Korean parents that try sheltering me from other things) so I have been unable to participate in Sports to my full potential. But I have now convinced my parents to allow me to partake in sports which I have always wanted to. However, I am in good physical condition so I will pass the CFA without a problem. Can do 100 crunches under 2 minutes, and around 60 push ups under 2 minutes, so I am not in bad shape considering my little participation in rigorous sports. (I work out any possible time I can at 24 Hr Fitness or just at home, etc..)

Course:
Freshman year took all possible courses, (6 classes) GPA was 3.95

I've taken the hardest possible classes which in sophomore year my school offers 2 honors classes: Honors English and Honors World History. GPA: 4.0

Junior Year I'm taking all IB Classes, so I currently have 6 IB classes. But I'm also taking Symphony Orchestra and Chamber Orchestra which is considered as two separate classes so I am taking 8 full classes throughout the Junior year. First semester I got an A- in Math and Chemistry which brought my GPA down a bit but 2nd semester I'll be sure to receive a 4.0.

Extracurricular Activities:
Orchestra/ Violin
-Went and performed with ALL-NW Orchestra which is a very competitive. orchestra
-I also went to All-State Orchestra which is also competitive
-At regional Solo and Ensemble for violin I won 1st place
-Past 4 Years I have received the top, superior rating award for violin solo.
-I am club president for Chess Club, Ping Pong Club, and FBLA Club.
-I am Secretary Treasurer for the Junior class of 2015 Student Government (I couldn't run for President because I am taking orchestra which disallows me to take leadership, which is essential to run for President of Vice- President)
- DECA. 1st Place at DECA Regionals for Business Finance this Junior Year. And I am running to be an officer in DECA.
-Qualified for State in FBLA (Future Business Leaders of America). Am looking to place for Nationals at FBLA because it is quite tangible judging by my and my partner's performance.
-I am and have been for 2 years in Teen Council, which is a planned parenthood organization which prioritizes leadership and support. We are a group of 18 Teens around the county who go around high schools and middle schools giving presentations about anti-bullying, Sex-Ed, etc. We meet every Wednesday for 2.5 hours.
- I have volunteered at Capital Medical Center for 2 years as a volunteer or greeter in the ER. I resupply materials, clean beds, help patients. I sometimes work at the front desk where I guide and greet patients and people looking for family in hospital rooms.
-I placed 1st at my schools Talent Show, where I sang for my talent while my friend played piano accompaniment.
-Received Award for helping and supporting at a local food bank my sophomore year.
- Have received 5 Academic All American Awards for the past 5 semesters of my high school career.
- Chamber Orchestra, which is recently considered a class because we often go to competitions, festivals, and concerts.
- I am a member of the National Honor Society.

In perspective I hope to do Boys State, since I am not affiliated with something like boy's scout which allows people to earn an eagle scout. My counselor and career cruising teacher is very eager to send me to Boy's State.

So an additional question I have is, does my minimal participation in sports really hurt my chances of getting into USAFA? Does not being a team captain of some sort in a sport kill my chances, or how much does it hurt my chances if at all?
What other things can I do to really make myself an outstanding candidate?

Thank You for reading all of this. Please be brutally honest as I am willing to change whatever I have to to be able to be an optimal candidate for the USAFA, USMA, or USNA! I am applying for all 3 academies.

The reply to this question is always the same. No one can give you a definite answer. Your resume looks pretty good, I don't see why you wouldn't be competitive.

The only way to find out is to apply.

Thank you for replying. I know that maybe the answer is the same, however I'm really looking for people that may know what I may be doing wrong. Actually,not necessarily wrong, but what I could do better or do something other than I am doing right now to make myself more "safe" in getting into a service academy!

Sounds like you have the academic part under control. Don't slack off, improve everything. That shows initiative.

Be a leader in the organizations you participate in. If you can't be the team captain, club president or vice-president, show your initiative and leadership capabilities in as many ways as possible. Pursue a leadership role in NHS.

Take your SAT's as often as you can. Improve your score every time.

I'm not sure if it's too late to apply for Summer Seminar at the Academy but I encourage you to do that if it's not closed. It may well be.

The Academy schedules regional forums throughout the year, usually in larger cities. The presenters are very helpful. The forums are a extremely beneficial for parents.

Read everything you can get your hands on regarding the Air Force Academy. Talk to as many people as you can. Visit the Academy website and read everything. Visit the Academy.

If there is a Civil Air Patrol Squadron in your vicinity, visit them. Often times, Senior members are Academy graduates or retired AF officers. More often so, there will be CAP Cadet(s) who are in the process of applying to the Academy and may have already been appointed.

Find out who your ALO is and make contact with him or her.

First and foremost, you need to get buy-in from your parents. If they approve, apply, apply, apply!!

Good luck!!

BRUH if you dont apply, you have no chance. None of us know the needs of the air force, and cant give you an idea if you'll make it or not.

For real thanks for posting the detailed description of you but no one knows. Simple as that

Writing this with all kindness, but I suggest you read all of the other chance me threads so you can understand why nobody can give you a chance answer that is worth more than 0.0198532 cents.

Appointments are not just about you, but it includes your school profile, your rank, GPA weight system, etc. A cgpa of 3.97 might sound great, but when you start adding in other factors that I have just mentioned it can go from great to ehhh. 3.97. Out a 5.0 is not stellar. 3.97 out of 4.0, and class rank is 25%, plus 0% go Ivy says As are handed out like candy on Halloween.

Appointments are initially tied to your MOC slate. Some states only offer one nom. Nobody here knows what the other 9 candidates will look like on paper. Only 1 can be charged to that MOC. IOWs, you might be a very strong candidate, but not the number one on the only non slate you were selected for, thus you will go to the national pool.

So in the end, whatever that poll created says is not something I would bank on as an indicator either way of what your chances are for an appointment. As said on every chance me thread you have 0% chance if you don't apply.

Let's be honest, will you change your mind if 100% of posters said no chance? If so, than time to do some reflection of how bad you want this path. This is a 9 year at least commitment. (4 SA, 5 AD)

As you will read one every chance thread make sure you have plan b, c and d in place, which probably includes AFROTC. AFROTC board operates differently, so take some time on the ROTC forum to understand the differences. Biggest differences are it is best sitting SAT, not super scored, doesn't include Sr. Yr. ECs or classes, different CFA and your intended major matters.

Best of luck.

Obtw, if you have not applied for SLS, I would do so...don't know if it is too late, but it is something to investigate. That's an EC that looks better than placing 1st place in a talent show.

FWIW, the thing that trips candidates up on the CFA is pull ups and ball throw. Fail one portion and you fail the entire exam. Max push ups is 85, (I think), how many pull ups can you do? Max is 18. If you are at 3, than I would suggest that you start to do pull ups. Download the CFA so you also know the proper testing procedure....rest times, form, etc.

Thank you all for your responses. But to clarify and answer some of you, the GPA at my school is un-weighted out of 4.0. So I have a 3.97/4.0 and I am about ranked at 24/337. As for extra- curriculars and leadership positions at school, I am President of FBLA, Chess club, and Ping Pong club. And if I can add, I am concert master of Chamber Orchestra which basically puts me as President of Chamber as well. And I am running for DECA President or VP this year which I will hopefully get. And as for Student Government, I hold a secretary treasurer position. (This is just reiteration)

Outside of school, Teen Council is basically a leadership position where I become the teacher at a middle school or high school for several periods whenever there are days open to Teen Council and I teach about Anti Bullying, Sex-Ed, and other societal issues or clarifications to fellow students, which, I believe is a very important opportunity and unique activity that may make me a bit more unique than others..?

And yet again, please, if I seem like I'm off track from getting accepted into USAFA (in your opinion), I urge you to tell me and hopefully guide me to the more "correct" path.

Oh, and I forgot to mention that I do have back up plans. I will be applying to all the Top 15 National schools. I will not be, at this moment in time, enlisting for any sort of ROTC or any other army related things if I do not get accepted into a Service Academy!

So what is your goal? Are you only applying to the Academies because they are some of the top institutions in the country? Or are you applying because you want to be a military officer? And if it is to be an officer, why would you not apply to AFROTC?

You obviously are bright and show great ECs but the sports need a boost. I think that is where you put your focus, but only if you are applying to the academies for the right reasons.

Oh I'm sorry if I sounded that way. So basically why I am not applying to ROTC and applying for the Academies is because first, the difference in benefits. From what I know the benefits the ROTC and the level of training it offers is just completely lacking when compared to an Academies teachings. Thus i'd outweigh going to a regular top school instead of inlisting for a lackluster army program (just comparing to Academy, I'm not trying to completely downplay the ROTC program, which is great.) And very importantly, I have very strong motivation to serve this country for at least 5 years (which is the minimum) then go get my Masters in Business Management. The reason I want to go throught USAFA or another service academy before a top Masters school is because I want to first become the best man and authority with top-notch moral and integrity that will become a help to both myself and others around me. I believe that going to a regular school wouldn't allow me to learn and go throught the learning opportunities that the Academies could offer me. Also, I believe that I am a very motivated person that is willing to take on challenging things and push myself to the limit, because I really do enjoy it. Therefore, I believe that a service academy would be fitting for my goal in life.

If I may ask, how exactly could I boost my Sports activities? would one or a couple varsity letters from Track and Field just not cut it? Also I believe that my leadership qualities are shown in my Non-athletic activities which my parents urged me into rather than athletic activities, which they did not want me doing.. :l. (Its just how Korean Parents work in my family line)

The best suggestion is to go to your GC and ask them to help find out the contact info for the ALO assigned to your district.

I have to ask if you have no intention of applying for ROTC why the SA?
~~~~ Guessing here, but I think you think ROTC is Army only or the other option is enlisting and have yet to do any research there.
I will assume the 15 you are applying to would include schools like:
UVA
Notre Dame
UPenn
UNCCH
Johns Hopkin
All of those schools offer AFROTC. UVA and UNCCH are considered public Ivies. It has been years for me now, but I believe Stanford does too. I am pretty sure MIT offers AFROTC.
Your last post is a tad disconcerting to me. Do you want to attend the AFA because in your eyes you see it as an Ivy league military school that is free, with guaranteed employment for 5 years or do you see it as military school with an Ivy league education. Two different things.
~~~ Do you know what BCT is?
~~~ Have you looked at their mandated curriculum regardless if your major is Econ or Chemical Engineering? Hint: They don't call the AFA in the ADAF The Little Engineering School in the Rockies for nothing!
~~~ Do you understand the term service before self? You may want to go to grad school straight out of undergrad, but the AF holds that final decision in their hands. They may send you straight to your first base. You may want to live in SC, or FL, but they may decide the only opening for your career field is Elmendorf AK or Minot ND.

If you can't answer these questions, take this time and read forums regarding grad school options, BCT expectations, ROTC selection.

I apologize, I've answered very unprofessionally and clear due to loads of HW..
Anyways to clear up a misconception I may have offered, I'm saying I want to do AFA or I want to go to an Ivy. What I mean by this is that if I do AFA, I want to go more all in to that path and become an officer then branch out as a new and improved person, which the academy life will sculpt me into. However, if AFA doesn't work out, I'd like to go all out towards the "normal" college life experience at an ivy league level school. I do not want to have the best of both worlds by going ROTC because that would disallow me from putting my utmost effort into one type of lifestyle. I'm sorry, did I clear that up? I know, my feelings are just pretty confusing I'm sure, even my parents are wondering what is going through my head, haha! :)

+1 to PIMA

You go to a service academy because you are committed to serve in the military. You give up your life for the sake and security of the country. You don't pick where you live, and as a Junior officer, you have responsibility without much authority.

Most TWE recipients join ROTC gladly and many decide it was a better route for them. Many get turned down for ROTC scholarships but join anyways enduring early morning PT and weekend training activities instead of football and friends. Some academy appointees decide it isn't right for them so they leave in the first two years. Others struggle with the academics or physical challenges and get separated. Most are constantly tired. Few feel like it is fun during their plebe year with few freedoms. They are jealous of those they went to High School with who have few responsibilities outside of studying.

Why do they stay? Because they want to serve, learn to lead, and because they feel the commitment that comes from patriotism. I have nothing but respect for those who attend and even more for those who survive and graduate.

I tell aquaintences that the academy my son attends may not cost anything out of pocket, but it is far from free.

GoBlue, I really like the way you put the last sentence. I realize that what the Academy offers may be free, but the challenges most definitely make up for the relief of no cost. But, I'd like to say that I am very prepared and excited for such a lifestyle.

And yet again, if anyone could tell me kinds of activities appointed cadets have done in High School so I can be enlightened on what kind of people get into the academies! :)

I was recently appointed to the Air Force academy for the class of 2018. My academics were lower than yours, but sport involvement outweighed that for me. It seems like you have lots of extracurricular activities, but I urge you to try gaining as much leadership as you can. I'm involved in JROTC in my school and much of my leadership comes from that and my sports teams. Being the captain of a team is huge. Also, I'm not sure if any of your clubs are community service, but that was a huge part of my extracurriculars.

I understand not wanting to do ROTC in college as a backup; however having an option b, c and d that all lead to the military shows the academy and your senators and congressman that you are invested in the military, not just the academy. While wanting to attend a SA for character and integrity building is great, the academy is more than that. I, like you, wanted to attend a SA for the experience and i did not even consider ROTC as an option. But after attending the summer seminar last year, I realized I want to be in the military. I want to dedicate my life to defending my country and helping others. If you are not committed heart and soul to giving your life to be part of the military, I strongly urge you to reconsider a service academy as your top choice.

Best of luck, hope some of this helped!

The thing is there is no clear cut answer regarding activities because the way the appointment process works, is it starts at your Congressional/Senatorial level. No appointment at that level you may be selected for national pool. You are basically asking the national level question.

If that is the answer you are looking for than go on the nom forums and start a thread for your state.
~~~ You cannot be appointed without a nomination.
~~~~ You need to win the WCS for your slate.

Again, ask your GC for the ALO contact info because as an AlO, they will also know how competitive you are in their pool.

Us, we know squat when it comes too chancing you from your ALO POV, your Congressman, and your Senator.

First, if you haven't been to this page to review the class profile, I suggest you do so: http://www.academyadmissions.com/admissions/advice-to-applicants/all-applicants/
Pay attention to how many had athletic letters under leadership. The entire page gives you a good idea of the things an academy cadet does in high school to win their appointment.

Second, if you think the academy is going to mold you into a particular type of individual I would say you are looking at it incorrectly. I think of it more as the academy provides an environment where you can [continue] to mold yourself into that individual. Ultimately it will all come from you. If you can't see yourself becoming that individual wherever you are, then I doubt very much you will successfully become that individual at a military academy.

Finally I sense no determination to serve or become an officer in you. Without that you will almost certainly not be successful in obtaining an appointment nor in surviving the rigors of the academy. I strongly suggest you do some soul searching. If you can find that desire and determination withing yourself then I say go for it; otherwise I would say don't waste your time.

Must my 2 cents.

ROTC is not lacking in any "benefits" at all, if I am understanding what you said correctly. Each ROTC unit is different for every school, so I cannot tell you exactly how joining ROTC will benefit you in terms of your education. What I CAN tell you is that Through ROTC you will get a genuine military training that is worthy of the same rank you will get when you graduate from any academy. ROTC can also pay for your college and secure you a commission upon graduating from college.

It seems like you have a feel for what you want to do, but you haven't done the research to know yet. I suggest that you look into both the academies and ROTC programs so you can learn more about each option.

One more tip: don't apply to a school JUST because of their reputation. A reputation won't mean that you will enjoy the school or benefit from what they have to offer.

Hello I am a junior that just ended first semester and I was hoping if someone that is well informed about the admission process in the USAFA could help me weigh myself in terms of if I can get into USAFA or not. (also the USMA and USNA)

First off
Cumulative GPA; 3.97

whoo! more fellow Koreans looking to apply to SA! Im not a USAFA applicant. Ur grades are great, and Boys State is recommended. I've made lots of great friends, and youll like it too.

Service Academies aren't too impressed with people with multiple ECs. What they are looking for is having responsible leadership positions in those activities (such as class president, club president, team captain, church, etc etc), and that's the key that you should aim for. Seeking leadership positions constantly is a challenge for many, and I get that, but you just gotta do it, man. Start getting along well with others, your classmates and teachers alike. Your classmates are your votes to leadership positions. Teachers are crucial part of your admission because they will evaluate you as a candidate (teacher recommendation). I mean, you want them to like you enough to say good things about you. Be active in classroom participation. A lot of those times, lots of smart kids are the ones who are the most silent in class.

And seriously think about why you want apply to service academies. Sooner or later, you will have to physically explain why to your interviewer face to face. It doesn't make sense for someone to just apply to Service Academies and not thinking about ROTC as plan B option (if you are truly genuine about serving this great nation). Don't just apply to SA's only just because they are prestigious and "free".

I have a question for you, what Congressional District (or what state) are you from?
