February 2014. I am a former US Marine with 10 years active duty and honorable service. My Stepson is a junior in the Florida Dual enrollment program at Santa Fe College and is interested in applying for our United States Naval Academy. I’m sure you are aware of the competitiveness of the Academy and the application process. Can we begin his application now? he still needs to take his SAT etc, can he still begin the application? our senator does not do his interviewing until September, how will this effect his chances?

He should apply to NASS (summer seminar) which serves as the preliminary application for USNA. Whether or not he is accepted to NASS, he will be one step further in the USNA application process. The USNA application process for current juniors (rising seniors) opens in June/July. He should take the SAT & ACT as often as he can between now and the end of the year. SAT/ACT scores and class rank are very important in WCS. He has time before his MOC applications will be due, but look at both Senators' websites and your Congressman's website for dates and application info. He is starting at the right time (it's a long process if you start as soon as you can. The class of 2018 is being formed now; many have had their applications in since last summer/fall and are waiting to hear about appointments.).

And read almost every thread on this forum-they are highly instructive and insightful.

Make sure that he is, if not already, taking the most challenging classes offered at school. Look for any leadership opportunities within clubs or sports - officer/captain positions hold a lot of weight. Also community service.

If he does NASS make sure he has the majority of his NROTC (plan b} scholarship done so he will not have to stress over it before leaving or on his immediate return.
~~~~ NROTC boards will start meeting in August. Many of the candidates will submit in July. It is a queue...first completed, first boarded.
My guess would be 90%+ USNA candidates will apply for NROTC scholarships, thus the competition is just as stiff. Like USNA there is a limited amount of slots available. Some colleges will fill up quickly,
The biggest thing will be time management. SA/NROTC interviews {BGO, MOC and NROTC). Essays. College selection/majors for NROTC. College visits. Throw in a couple of SAT/ACT tests and fall sports that start training in August, plus the DoDMERB exams, and you will realize that you will be happy to get plan B submitted in July because by Sept it can be hectic.
To answer the original questions, he cannot start the formal application process yet. I don't know if he can apply to NASS; I thought it was only for rising h.s. seniors but you can check on the usna.edu website. Applications for that program are open now.
The formal application process for USNA opens around 1 May. That information is also available on the website. For college students, USNA will not review the record until after first semester grades are in -- which means January. So there is no rush.
Your senator actually interviews early! They don't need to turn in their slates until Jan. 31 and the nomination process is separate from the USNA application process.
Your DS should definitely take calc, chem, history, English and/or physics, to the extent he's not already done so.
I suggest you read the stickies on this thread and the nominations thread -- they provide a lot of good info for all candidates.
I took the OP's post ("junior in the Florida Dual enrollment program at Santa Fe College") to mean that his DS is a junior in high school taking college classes through dual enrollment while in high school, so he would be eligible for NASS (if the enrollment period is still open).
If he is indeed a college student, it is a different process.
So the class 2018 is being formed now? does this mean he will not if excepted will not start attending until that date? is it always a four year wait? or does that mean when he will graduate the academy?
They refer to each class by the date they will graduate 4 years later, so those entering the USNA this summer (2014) will graduate in 2018, hence "the class of 2018."
No, I'm not in FL. I sent you a PM so you could PM back since you have less than 5 posts.
