Does a LOE correspond to an appointment to West Point, or is it simply an allowance to visit the academy overnight? I received mine recently, and am curious as to its significance as far as my application is concerned.

No, it is simply a letter stating that you are a highly competitive candidate that West Point is very interested in, and it also authorizes you an overnight visit. This is NOT to be confused with an acceptance letter or an offer of appointment. But, it is a very good sign.

Go for it...

If it is feasible for you, take advantage of the overnight visit. The most important opportunity will be meeting with an admissions rep there to review your file with you. I think this would be advantageous connecting a name to a face. Especially at this stage of the game.

I received an LOE on 31 Jan 2014. I just came back from my overnight visit which was 24 Feb through 25 Feb. When I was leaving WP, I scheduled a meeting with my RC. In the meeting, my RC told me I was appointed. I then came home to the BFE waiting for me! Im not saying the same will happen for you, but if you receive an LOE and WP asks you to stay the night, that means they are interested in you! No promises, but it is a very good sign!

If I could tag along with another LOE question......should the LOE letter be posted on the candidate portal? My DS got a hard copy a few months ago in the mail but it never showed up on portal. Assume it's still visible to admissions in his file? Thx.

Some candidates get a hard copy and nothing in the portal. Some get it in the portal and not in the mail. As long as you have one copy of it, you're good. My DS got a LOE in the mail (still not on his portal), and a 3Q letter in his portal.
