After years of research and discussion, my son will be starting the process this summer as a candidate for the class of 2019. I have not been a part of this research and preparation as this is his journey and I want him to be solely responsible for this process. I do want to understand what role sport recruitment will have in the application. Looking at current results for the track and cross country teams, he would be competitive at his current times Junior year. Should his coaches contact the coaches at the academy regarding his desire to attend? What level of importance is there in the admission process for recruited athletes? Any insight you could provide would be greatly appreciated.

Well, the baseball coaches recruiting of my son and the coaches submission of a "chip" sheet to admissions didn't help my son get past a "hold" (waiting list for when vacancies open up). So it's hard to say I guess.

My son was interested in playing a sport at USMMA. He contacted the coach directly. Thereafter, he sent statistics and tape to the coaches. The assistant coach has made himself very available and answered many questions. Did it help with admission? My guess is each case is different.

My daughter was on the XC and track teams. She contacted the coach directly, I believe. Or maybe he contacted her after seeing her high school activities on her application. I really don't remember at this point. I do know that her high school coaches were never involved. I think sports recruitment is a plus for an applicant. But the applicant has to be competitive from an admissions point of view to start with. A coach can also help with questions about the admissions process. It's not a golden ticket, but it certainly helps. I don't know the current track/XC coaches, so I can't give you any more specific information about them.

Best of luck to your son!

Firstly,
I commend you for your efforts as a parent to be as involved as possible in the process. With it being such a difficult application process, it'll be hard for him to always fill you in. On the other hand, it would be best if your son also took a hands on approach and did everything--all appointment making, meeting coaches, sending in forms---all on his own. The best applicants and those who eventually do well at the academy, are independent, yet have great parent support.

That being said, in terms of athletic recruitment at USMMA, it's all Division 3, being they are on the bottom tier and recruitment isn't as competitor or strict. For track/XC, I contacted both coaches early junior year, emailed them an athletic resume, and then had a day visit to the academy in the summer of my junior year and worked out with the Women's XC team. I was one of the best during practice and the coach saw how well I ran and mixed with the team. That was that. I was recruited! Then, after you continue to say in touch with the couches, emailing them updates with scores. All you do is sign a contract when you get to KP with NCAA.

Jackie, USMA USAFA USMMA Candidate for Class of 2018
Principally Nominated to USMA & USAFA

First, best wishes as DS and you begin this new chapter and journey. My DS was not recruited by the big 3, USNA, USMA, USAFA, but was recruited by USCGA and USMMA. I am hopeful that your DS has filled out the recruitment form(s) for the academies that he is interested in (and you reviewed) and submitted them. My DS did send in a link of game films to the coaches and then followed up with, I would like to visit the academy and am wondering if we could meet. My DS did visit all of the academies and after the visit he decided which academies he wanted to have a more in depth/involved visit and scheduled day visits and over night visits and met with the coaches again. These were very helpful for my DS because he was able to listen to the student athletes and get a feel of what they thought of the coaches and it was also a good way to see how they interacted with my DS and possibly as future teammates. Again, best wishes to you and DS on this new chapter and journey.

Go to the Academy's Cross Country page - http://www.usmmasports.com/sports/mxc/index

Click on Recruiting and fill in the questionnaire. Also, if you click on Coaches you can get the coach's e-mail address.
