If you have been offered NAPS, would you be willing to share your stats?

CannotBeDisplayed has...

I got home to a very large packet and folder from the Naval Academy Dean of Admissions. I have received an appointment to USNAPS, dated February 06, 2014. :wow:

In case anyone is wondering, I have a GPA of approximately 3.62, my class rank is 2nd out of 9. My ACT scores were 34 English; 28 Math; 33 Reading; 34 Science; and 29 English/Writing. My SAT scores were 670 Math, 680 Writing, and 640 Reading. I know you don't need a nomination for USNAPS, but for informative purposes for readers of this post, I did not receive a nomination of any kind to USNA. While it is no doubt that I am happy as can be right now, I am curious as to what under-qualified me. Would you be USNAPS eligible if the highest-level math class you took was pre-calculus? My school only offers the basic four math classes (though I am taking a college algebra class online through UT Permian Basin). Or did one of my test scores or GPA not make the cut? Curiosity killed the cat, I know, but one has to wonder.

This was a much-welcomed surprise for me. My parents were clearly very excited about the packet as I had 16 missed calls and 8 texts from my mother when I checked my phone after school.

USNA is my second choice, so I will not be accepting or declining until I hear back from USAFA about my status, which works out fine because I have until May 1st to do so.

I would like to thank everyone on these forums for the previous guidance and continued guidance given to us candidates. I'd have been more lost than Christopher Columbus without this community. :shake:

Your scores look really good. Have you considered that you were offered USNAPS because you did not get a nomination?

I have, and my stats are quoted above. Is there anything else you would like me to share?

I am really not sure why I received the offer. The only things I can think of that might underqualify me are my highest level math course taken (pre-cal), my sub-par GPA, or that ACT math score, though it's right at the average. I didn't do too awesome on the CFA (though I'm certain I at least passed it) compared to a lot of users on here. I am most definitely not a recruited athlete.

I am a minority (Hispanic) from a very rural area (though my district may contain a lot of military-oriented candidates because it contains parts of San Antonio and El Paso, the rest of it is pretty sparse), and I did not receive a nomination. As far as I am aware, admissions doesn't use USNAPS to park candidates they really want who did not receive nominations. There has to be something that admissions thinks needs improvement in my academic file. I don't know what it is, all I know is that I am happy and blessed to receive this opportunity.

Grades and scores look fine, but there is more to it.

It may not be you but the school you attended may not have offered you the best opportunity to shine. School may not have a stellar level of education compared to other schools in your district or State. Level of courses; AP classes, IB classes available, did you attempt them. Other factors are leadership opportunities, athletics, candidate fitness. The full portfolio is taken into consideration.
I do know one other that is going to NAPS, but I do not know her specifics. She learned through an email from NAPS last week. She did not receive a nomination.

Good luck with your choice.

I think that would most definitely be it. My school has a total enrollment of 40 students, no AP or IB classes available (I took it upon myself to take online college classes to supplement this), and its status based on standardized state tests was "Needs Improvement." Right now, based on the new STAAR tests (which I never took, I was part of the last class to take TAKS), it is "Academically Unacceptable."

I don't think my leadership/ECs were a factor, I'm pretty well covered in that area. The physical stuff + my school may be the issue.

In any case, thank you.

One of my friends was offered NAPS about 2 weeks ago. She had 1 nomination- Presidential.

Can you still be offered an appointment to USNA after you receive an appointment to NAPS?

Being offered NAPS may have been to prepare you for the academic rigor at the Academy. AP or IB classes seem to be crucial to applicants... It does seem unfair though because that's beyond your control in your case. NAPS is still a great option, and you know the Academy saw you as a deserving applicant despite your circumstance.

No. NAPS is offered because you are promising but lack the academic credential. Academically qualified students don't get NAPS appointments. But, complete a satisfactory year at NAPS and you will likely receive the USNA appointment the following year.

I was offered to NAPS around the same time as CannotBeDisplayed. I suspect it has something to do with GPA or the level of classes that I took. I only took 3 AP classes throughout my high school career. Other than that standardized test scores seem to be about average, and athletics/ECs are most definitely not an issue.

I recieved my NAPS appointment March 15, 2014. My stats were pretty decent all around!

DS is NAPS bound!

Son sent in his NAPS acceptance on Saturday. He is an RA who had previously received an invitation for direct appointment....but a few weeks ago, was told that he would be going the NAPS route instead. We had originally anticipated and prepared for NAPS all along due to decent, but not great SAT's. When the offer for class of 2018 came, we were actually surprised.

Not sure of the exact circumstances that caused the change, but it seems that several RA's who received Superintendent NOM's were 'reassigned' to NAPS. Hearing that this year is a first for this...and it may have something to do with the drawdown and the high number of principle MOC NOMs were still on the waitlist.

Aside from the rollercoaster of uncertainty....DW and I are very comfortable and excited for NAPS. More importantly...so is DS! I've been reading nothing but good things about NAPS and truly believe this is the best option for DS!

Looking forward to meeting other NAPS families very soon!

My son was accepted and his response was sent in. He is excited about football and has spoken to.the coaches. And he is very excited.

This has been a hell of a ride. I believe this is a great opportunity for him and he is ready for the challenge.

He has been working harder on his speed and he is ready to go.
