so son is a senior in high school and just spent four days being hosted by battalion where he got his arotc scholarship. He was told that after freshman year there is now a "cadet camp" that is new. It was a whirlwind four days so not all information was retained accurately...anyone have any clues?

Thanks Jcc123, he was under the impression this started for summer of 2015 (after his MSI yr). From the article it does not. What do MSIs typically do over the summer between Freshman and Sophomore year? He was told CULP was for between Sophomore and Junior year.

(....insert visions of him home lying on my couch for three months....)

He can most definitely apply for CULP as an MSI!! My DS spent the summer after his MSI year in the Marshall Islands (South Pacific). It was a great experience.

Depending on the size of his battalion, his position on the OML, and the number of slots they have, he could possibly compete for an Airborne or Air Assault slot. Given that they're becoming fewer in number though, they'll most likely go to MSIIs and IIIs. The less common schools like Mtn Warfare, Dive, etc. are becoming even rarer so he may not have those as an option. DS went to Dive School after his MSII year, but I'm hearing no cadet slots are available this year.

If he's interested in foreign languages and cultures, he can also apply for a Project GO scholarship as an MSI if he doesn't get a CULP slot. Read about that here: http://www.rotcprojectgo.org

The new training program will be tested in some fashion prior to 2017, so it is possible that he could attend as part of a pilot program. It's a bit difficult to say what opportunities will be available going forward given the upcoming changes to the program. Just tell your DS to get and keep himself towards the top of the OML, and make sure his cadre are aware that he wants additional training. My DS indicated his interest in CDQC (dive school) during his PMS interview! He was told "we've never had a slot and it won't happen". He worked hard and they "found" him a slot - the only one in his entire brigade.

Best of luck to your cadet!

Jcc123, thanks for al of your help. can I ask a follow up question?

Regarding CLIP-B and CLIP-Eligible. Is there a difference?

On the website:
http://www.rotcprojectgo.org/policies/army

it states:

Foreign Language/Cultural Studies Bonus – also known as CLIP-B (Culture and Language Incentive Pay-Bonus) is a bonus of up to $3000 (before taxes and deductions) a year for satisfactorily completing (C or above) approved foreign language and cultural studies courses.

Languages Lists

  1. Arabic – all dialects
  2. Chinese – all dialects
  3. Hausa – and all indigenous Sub-Saharan languages/dialects (except Afrikaans)
  4. Indonesian – all dialects
  5. Japanese
  6. Korean
  7. Malay and Malaysian languages and dialects
  8. Persian – all dialects including: Dari, Farsi, Tajik
  9. Pashto – all dialects and languages of Afghanistan
  10. Portuguese – all dialects
  11. Russian and all Slavic languages, as well as Romanian, Hungarian, Latvian, Lithuanian, and Estonian
  12. Turkish and languages of Central Asia: Turkmen, Uzbek, Kazakh, Uyghur
  13. Urdu, Hindi and languages of the Indian Subcontinent: Punjabi, Bengali, Telegu, Tamil, Sinhalese, and Burmese
  14. Vietnamese, Khmer and Laotian and other South East Asian dialects
A total of over 70 languages are now CLIP-eligible, nearly all of which are found in Asia, Africa, and Eastern Europe

On the bottom is says that "A total of over 70 languages are now CLIP-eligible, nearly all of which are found in Asia, Africa, and Eastern Europe" so if son is considering studying a language not on the numbered list but is part of the over 70 languages are now CLIP-eligible will that bonus apply?

TIA

I got the impression from the article, and perhaps I misread it, that they would be testing the program during the summer of '15. Perhaps his college was selected as one of the schools to participate in that?

This article gives a little insight. I believe it's not slated to take effect for all cadets until 2017.
I think you are thinking of the wrong thing. What I think you were referrencing was the Cadet Leader Course (CLC) ... which, from what I've collected can be loosely described as a "first" iteration of LDAC (w/ the 2nd occuring during the traditional summer between Jr. and Sr. year).

I think Vista was referring to the Cadet Initial Entry Training (CIET) that the Battalion probably spoke of, which occurs between Fresh. and Soph. year.

to be honest

To be honest I have no idea what Im talking about. My son discussed summer training with PMS and other's in charge and he was consistently told about going to "cadet camp in Kentucky" we have no idea what that means.

He is waiting to see what is meant. The only reason I was asking now is that the University itself has great summer options that are coupled with classes than he can take in the fall (IE study Russian politics and over summer go to Russia).

CIET is mentioned in the article but it looks as if it really begins the following summer.

"Cadet Initial Entry Training, or CIET, will take place between every cadet's freshman and sophomore year. A pilot program for this summer training will be tested next summer at Fort Knox, Ky., Smith said, adding that the aim is to make CIET mandatory for all cadets beginning in 2016. "

I tried to find more in-depth information in CIET but my research skills came up lacking....

Nope - not lacking. I've found nothing else discussing the afore mentioned, except that article.

DS is a MSII who transferred into AROTC after two years of AFROTC. He stated that it is a possibility he may have the opportunity to attend CIET this summer, and described it as being kind of like "LDAC light" and about a month long. I wonder if it may be a way to play "catch up" as he did not attend first year AROTC. It is still only a slim possibility at this time, but he is very excited at the possibility of attending.

Interesting - I'm surprised that they aren't going to send him to LTC instead. Usually that is used as the "catch up" program for Army. Or maybe it's because CC is just trying to test the waters now.
