Where are the New York appointees?

If you look at the appointment thread there seems to be a lack of folks from New York on it. I see only one from NY and I know he had a LOA. Is this abnormal or is NY just a late state? Given that we have the 3rd largest number of representatives in the country, I would have expected more by now. Can anyone shed some light on this?

As already mentioned, I'm in the same boat as you. Principal nomination since late December, 7th semester transcript processed on Feb. 19th, still no word. I guess they haven't gotten to NY yet.

I would point out that not all candidates know about this forum. My DS knows of 3 other appointees from CT besides himself and they are not posted on the class of 2018 thread.

I read somewhere that if the Principal nominee (if there is one) is waiting on a medical waiver, no one from the slate will be appointed until there's a decision on the Principal. If the Principal's waiver is denied, then they would start moving down the list. Don't know if that's the case in NY.

Over on the USMA class thread, only 65/500+ appointments handed out to date are listed (~13%), so as mjm pointed out, the current list of 77 USNA appointments is most likely only a fraction of the total appointments that have gone out.

In answer to the original question of where are the NY appointees, the answer is that eventually they will be from all across the state... at least one from each congressional district. Patience. You're down to the short strokes. Deep breaths.

I do realize that, but if you look at all the states represented, given the size of NY, I would think you would see a few more. If only 20% of the candidates or their parents are on the forums, you should see about 4-5 versus the 1. Here are the top represented states by population and the % of appointees compared to the number of seats: CA-13%,TX-19%,NY-4%,FL-11%,IL-22%,PA-17% and OH-25%. FL and NY both have 27 reps and IL and PA both have 18. I see one from CT, which would represent 20% (1 of 5 seats), so the 20% forumn viewing is a good estimate. It should be noted my census data may not be the most up to date, but couldn't have changed that drastically.

In my DS's case, he is the principal and is already 3Q. I think that is the case with gavigane14 as well.

Thread lists only a fraction of appointment offers

USNA, in its "Application Guidance for the Class of 2018" attachment to the Official Candidate letter states that "[a]bout 40 percent of the total Offers of Appointment will have been made by mid-January. The remaining candidates selected for appointment will normally be notified by mid-April." So, if there are 1500 offers made to fill 1200 slots, then by mid-January USNA will have already sent out about 600 offers (much higher number that the 77 or so on the appointment thread). Since mid-January, then, USNA has had more than six weeks to make additional offers.

As of February 26 only 20% (150) of approximately 750 in-coming high school appointments had been decided. I won't share the source but the percentage is accurate.

Well given that, your worrying about it accomplishes.... what? Your DS is in. It's simply a matter of waiting for the time to elapse. And even if he wasn't the principal nom, my answer would be the same. I imagine your son is far less worried about it than you. Take a cue from him. Deep breaths. You'll get your confirmation soon enough. The only thing your accomplishing is raising your blood pressure! Use your energy to think of fun things to do with your son while he is there. Take him out to dinner or fix him his favorite meal. Have some fun!

Yes master, your point and those of others is well taken. :) Plans B and C are secure, so we have preached patience. We see his BGO in church each Sunday and even he is surprised he has not heard yet. Must be a NY thing.
As for fun, his favorite activity outside of school is skiing and we are not encouraging that at this point despite all the white stuff we have.

Does that 20% represent appointments offered or appointments accepted? Just curious.

Calming Information!!

Thanks so much bubalma! This is exactly the type of concrete informaion that we nervous parents need right now:thumb:

As stated in my original post, 20% of all appointments for incoming high school candidates have been decided on by Admissions. That percentage has nothing to do with BFE's actually mailed or appointments accepted by candidates upon receipt of BFE's.

Thanks for clarifying.

CT appointees

I would point out that not all candidates know about this forum. My DS knows of 3 other appointees from CT besides himself and they are not posted on the class of 2018 thread.

That doesn't bode well for my son here in CT, I guess. Would you share which districts in CT the appointees are from and if they were nominated by one of our senators or by their representative? Thanks in advance!

All 4 are from CT-04, so the nomination situation is a little strange. 2 of the 4 had LOAs as well (myself included) if that makes a difference, Fairfield County usually has many more than the usual for reasons you can probably guess.

Sadly, we also live in CT-04. Would you share if any of the appointees were nominated by Congressman Himes? Are all 4 of them planning on accepting their appointments? Thanks in advance!

I really didn't think it needed clarifying.

Well, initially you said, "As of February 26 only 20% (150) of approximately 750 in-coming high school appointments had been decided."

After I posed my question, you added, "by Admissions." For me that answered the question whether it was Admissions deciding on whether to offer an appointment to the candidate, or the candidate deciding to accept the appointment once offered.

I know there are candidates with multiple appointments waiting to hear from other SAs who may not have turned down any appointment yet, and it just got me to wondering whether those spots were filled or just offered.

Thank you again for answering.
