Hello

My son, accepted to Citadel, is scheduled for an overnight visit early April and is also scheduled for the CSI program over the summer. Does any have experience with these? If so, please share! Unfortunately he is doing session 2 of CSI as the first day of session 1 is the day he graduates from high school.

Also, anyone out there planning to attend the Citadel this fall (or already there) from the Boston or New England area?

He is very excited for his new adventure!

Thanks!

I live next to the Citadel, and my best friend did CSI.

He said the biggest benefits from it are that you can knock a class or two out of the way before school starts and that you get to learn a lot of the knob knowledge in a less stressful environment, which makes a world of a difference.

If y'all have any questions feel free to ask!

My son did the overnight visit and really enjoyed it. He said they didn't sugar coat anything and that everyone answered all of his questions honestly. Congrats and good luck at the Citadel!

those attending CSI have a much lower attrition rate and its a good opportunity to get immersed in the culture of the school rather than 'drinking through a firehose' during cadre in August. He will enjoy it and benefit greatly, good luck!

My son has been accepted also and is attending the overnight April 3. We have visited there 3 times and are very impressed with the school. Everyone we have spoken to says the CSI program is great to get a couple classes out of the way to lessen their first year burden and to get them more physically fit.

Good luck!

You may want to consider joining at least one of the dozens of FB groups for Citadel parents. I'm sure you'll find other New Englanders, as well as other parents with either CSI experience or a son or daughter planning on going this summer.

There's already of class of 2018 parent group with something like 60 members. A few parents of recent graduates are moderators.

Thanks for all the responses! I will also check out the Facebook pages!

I appreciate it.

Good luck to young "Navyburd Junior". After interviewing him- I'm sorry he won't be at VMI. But he will do great down at the Citadel & VMI's loss will be a big pickup for the Citadel:thumb:

My CSI Experience

Hey,

I was class of 2016 and went through CSI, thought I'd give a little taste.

It's kind of like being half a knob. We'd have to stand at attention but wouldn't brace. We could only walk certain places on campus but did not have to run around. Weekend Inspection took 5 minutes (about four hours less than the usual SMI we got as knobs). We DID get to leave each weekend, which made the entire thing so much easier.

I must say, however, CSI is very supervised; it reflects only how the school should be. It did not include the 'shine parties' or 'knob missions' we got later on. To be honest, my CSL (squad leader) was excellent - he told us everything he thought after three years of being a cadet... But pretty much everything I was told as a knob was the opposite. In other words, the ethos of CSI (run by the administration) and the corps (run mainly by cadets) are very much different.

The big question: did it help? That is hard to say. While I did get a headstart on knob year and learn some useful tips, knob year itself was not any easier, nor was it any shorter. If anything, I wish I had learned how it actually was as a knob.
