What exactly does "Pending Waiver Submission/Review" mean? Is this automatic or is this something the academies request?

I believe it means DoDMERB is waiting for the SA and/or ROTC unit (if awarded a scholarship) to request the waiver. See below from the FAQ section on DoDMERB:

A medical waiver allows applicants to enter military service programs even though they may not have met DoD medical standards. Waivers may be granted by the program to which you’re applying, NOT DoDMERB. The Service Academies automatically consider applicants for a medical waiver if they are competitive for admission. All ROTC programs will automatically consider all scholarship awardees and competitive scholarship applicants for a waiver.

If the SA will consider a waiver, you should see entries similar to the following in the timeline:

09-DEC-13 Date letter sent - Remedial Listing of codes

Under the specific Agency (i.e. service academy, NROTC, etc...), you would see the following:

R259.01 Applicant DQ - Waiver Authority requests additional information

Waiver

Well, USMMA requested a waiver and said we should here from dodmerb in mid to late January. Oh the anticipation is killing us....here's to hoping it goes in DS's favor.

This has to be the best code set on the entire DoDMERB website:

Current Medical Status: Medical waiver granted
D259.30 Waiver Approved - USMMA

DS's timeframes FWIW:
31JULY2013: DoDMERB Medical and vision exam
14AUG2013: DodMERB DQs (2 total)
3DEC2013: USMMA LOA (Conditional: Nom, Medical and 7th Semester)
6DEC2013: Waiver requested by USMMA
3JAN2014: Nomination received
17JAN2014: 7th Semester Grades
30JAN2014: All remedial info confirmed in Colorado
28FEB2014: Waiver Approved

All in, 7 months.

Observation: As stated in these forums, EVERY medical waiver is unique.

Thanks for your post. DODMERB screen updated today to show that they have reviewed remedial report. Waiting to see the results. Did you hear of the "waiver granted" news from DODMERB or USMMA?

Both. 1st call was from USMMA, congrats, etc...

We then had a hiccup at DODMERB and received a call from them.

My DS had 2 DQs. They approved one but the other got lost in the shuffle. Ended up back at BUMED and took a day or so to approve 2nd waiver and straighten everything out.

Noticed yesterday his USMMA portal changes from Medical: Pending to Medical: Waiver.

Hope you hear soon. Found the process to be lengthy but all good in terms of the people involved.

Did DODMERB change before you received word of your waivers or did it stay at pending waiver submission review ? My son's portal has stayed at that since late Sept. He needs a vision waiver so a remedial won't be necessary . He has a very slight ( just over the allowed ) astigmatism and he corrects to 20/25. Everyone says he should get one but we have heard nothing as of yet.

My son's portal stayed at "pending waiver submission/review" until the waiver was granted. At that point the portal was updated to indicate "waiver granted".

DS's portal said pending waiver request/submission since August. Once the waiver was requested by USMMA, it changed to waiver requested. We were sent paperwork from dodmerb for a remedial. DS also has a vision DQ for "distant acuity not correctable to 20/20." He is correctable to 20/25. We went and had another eye screening...results were identical. Once we sent in the paperwork, it took about 3 weeks for waiver to be granted.

He still has a DQ for USNA and CGA. We have had no indication of a waiver being requested....yet.

Heyriddle, thanks for your descriptions. My son's Dodmerb says
Agency: US Army ROTC
Cycle Year:2013
Current Medical Status: Pending Waiver Submission/Review

So it looks like the Army hasn't even requested a waiver for him. Ugh. Oh well, there's nothing to do but wait and see if they are interested. It's very frustrating when the condition no longer exits.

Confused

My son's USNA and CGA DoDMERB portals have the standard "pending waiver submission/review" notation. However, his Merchant Marine changed to "Waiver Denied" on Tuesday of this week and then changed back to "pending waiver submission/review" on Wednesday. However, in the box below it shows "waiver denied" along with the codes and conditions noted that caused his DQ to start with. So, has he been denied, is he still eligible for a waiver? We're not sure. We do know that DoDMERB was notified of a procedure he is having next week to deal with the condition that caused the DQ and hope this means they are waiting on a report from that before a final waiver decision is made, but if anyone has any insight it would be nice.

DS has the same statement on USNA and CGA. I think once he had a LOA from USMMA, they requested the waiver.

It's an extremely frustrating process.

Heyriddle, what is an LOA?

My son didn't apply to any of the academies. He started the process with the Naval Academy (his grandfather was in the Navy for 30 years), but once he had his Dodmerb medical exam and was disqualified for his color deficiency, he changed to applying for the Army ROTC. He realized that even on the miracle he received a waiver for his color deficiency, there would be limited duties in the Navy and he would not have limitations in the Army. Anyway, he received an Army scholarship, but it looks like there is nothing left to be done but wait until the Army decides whether or not they would like to request a waiver. Maybe they are waiting until they have made the third board decisions.

Does he have an appointment to CGA or USNA?
All medical waiver requests have to be initiated by the service academies.
