Do yourself a favor and be careful with your social media
plebe-trolling has begun.

#USNA18...

The mid I dragged with on my CVW told me to look that up. I lost brain cells reading some of those posts.

Watch what you post on the internet, the midshipman sure get a kick out of messing with plebes!

Can someone please inform me of this plebe trolling?

How are Mids able to hone in on appointees' social media and other internet-based activities?

Because they write stuff on Twitter and sometimes Instagram with the hashtag #usna18. All you have to do is create a column using Tweetdeck or search for that hashtag to follow someone who posted with that tag. Then you can stalk away. Forever. Without ever actually "following" that person.

It never ceases to surprise me how many people post their acceptance letters with their full name and address, or the teenagers who post their driver's licenses with name, address, and DL #, along with some hashtag that easily points all the bad guys who would steal your identity right at you.

I see. What does this trolling entail?

People have created fake accounts and are tagging posts #usna18. It's pretty funny to watch the tag. But I feel bad for the unsuspecting soon-to-be plebe who innocently posted a hashtagged tweet about getting an appointment using his real name.

That sounds terrible for whomever has that account. Glad I didn't make the mistake of using those hashtags.

Don't post anything incriminating because the detailers are watching as well as quite a few others. It's best not to single yourself out before you even get there.

My personal favorite is the guy (fake account) who called out somebody saying they wouldn't make it more than a week when in fact the subject was a current 2/C. Lots of fun with all the future seal guys as well...

Will the retailers use anything posted on social media as a means of breaking you down?

Bewildered

OK so I just looked at the #usna18 tag on Twitter...WOW. There were at least 5 people that had their FULL NAMES AND ADDRESSES posted when they took pictures of their appointments. :bang: :screwy: :jaw:

It amazes me how these air-headed people ever became appointees. Like honestly, the lack of brains is shocking. How did these people get in? And I'm not just going off of seeing their appointment pictures, but some of their other tweets. *sigh*

Many more deserving candidates who were not accepted should be the ones getting ready for this Plebe Summer, not these folks. Rant over. :unhappy:

Twitter isn't exactly a bastion of intellectual thought, I'm sure lots of kids who weren't appointed had some pretty stupid stuff on their twitters as well.

What saddens me is the cynicism and arrogance some Mids seem to embody when replying to some of the tweets.
