I was on the February board and received a Type 7 for Aerospace Engineering today! :groupwave:

I'm wondering what the conversion process was like for a type 7 to a type 2?
I'm accepted to a state school where the tuition is $13,472 a year. But I also got accepted to an out of state school where the tuition is $42,294. Would I be eligible to convert?

I'd love to see who else has heard as well! Good luck to those who haven't heard yet! :thumb:

Congrats on the scholarship!

You might be eligible to convert if you can make a positive impression once you reach your detachment, but like everything you've experienced in the process so far, its going to be very competitive and nothing is guaranteed.

You'll need to make a decision on which school to attend that you can live with regardless if the type 2 scholarship develops AND regardless if you remain in the AFROTC program. My son is a POC junior now...one of only 13 in his detachment from a starting class of 60. I'm sure you are planning to stick with it and make it all the way to an officer commission, but your school choice might be better made on which school you'd go to if that weren't in the cards.

Just my two cents....

I thought I had posted a response earlier but evidently I never hit submit or something, so here goes again.

It's my understanding that it only takes your signature to convert a type 7 4 year to a type 2 3 year. The paperwork, as I recall, is included in the scholarship package you will receive by snail mail.

However, you really need to think long and hard about this. First, the type 7 will cover all your tuition at the state school. If you convert it to a type 2, you will need to come up with the full tuition for your freshman year. In subsequent years, the type 2 will only cover up to $18,000 of the tuition to the OOS school. You will be responsible for the rest. Further, what if you don't get selected for SFT between sophomore and junior years? I know.... you don't expect that to happen to you... but neither did anyone else and it happens all the time. How are you going to cover that tuition for your final 2 year?

Perhaps you have scholarships or otherwise have the wherewithal to handle the tuition costs at the OOS so maybe it's no big deal to you. However, I can assure you my DS would be taking the type 7 at the state school.

Kinnem is correct. To convert the scholarship to a Type 2 3 year is just signing on the dotted line.

As stated the problem is they will only cover 18k, starting your sophomore year. Colleges on a whole up their costs by at least 5% a year, but more commonly around 10%. If this year to costs 42k, don't be shocked if it is 50k before you activate the scholarship, and 60k by graduation. Thus, the question is even if you get EA, is the school worth the additional 150k in costs?

That's certainly a lot to consider. Thank you everyone! I had no idea it would be as simple as "signing on the dotted line".

I'll be sure to go over these details with my parents. They did indicate they would pay the difference, but now I have a better picture of what that difference will be.

Thanks again!

They will send you an email with a link to a form that you have to fill out to accept your scholarship. They have two check boxes on the form. One says you want to keep your type 7, the other says you want to convert it to a 3 year type 2.

Just out of curiosity, when did you get the email/when did you know what major you were doing? My portal just updated yesterday, but I haven't gotten an email or know what major I can do.

The letter that stated that I had received a scholarship and my DoDMERB packet came the same day about a week after my portal updated. About a week after that, I got an email asking how I wanted the scholarship presented to me plus info for a press release. The following week, an email came which listed my scholarship and major as well as a link to the form to confirm my scholarship. The form was pretty buggy for me, so it took a few calls to my scholarship technician before I was finally able to confirm it.

Those waiting for AFROTC will have to wait a bit longer...the next board will meet 3/31-4/4 with results coming out around April 25th. Arghh!
