Has anyone heard and used this website?
http://platoonleader.army.mil/

It seems like a really useful and great website, but I was wondering if ROTC Cadets are allowed to use it or do you have to be a commissioned officer to join?

You just need a .mil email address and you can join, I joined it as a cadet, a lot of great resources there. However I think you need a CAC card to log into milsuite now, someone correct me if I'm wrong, so you might need to use a CAC card reader to do this.

They've just in the last few days published a non-CAC version of the site. It still requires registration, but doesn't run on milsuite.

Do you know the URL for this? I can't find a link on the other site.

Curious, are you in the NG or Reserve? I asked my ROO shop about CAC cards today, and he told me, as a cadet we don't get issued CAC cards.

Any cadet who goes on a CULP trip will be issued a CAC. And it's CAC, not CAC card...a bit redundant.

I commissioned over the summer so I'm a 2LT. But your ROO is correct you won't get a CAC card until you report to BOLC if your active duty or until the day you commission if you are NG or Reserves. That is unless you go to CULP or some other army summer training besides LDAC/LTC. To clarify I was able to get on as a CDT because you use to not need a CAC to get onto the site, they changed that last year, but sounds like they just changed it back to not needing a CAC so you should be able to get on.

You do however I believe once you return the CAC is no longer active. At least for the cadets I know.

DD did CULP summer 2012 and received id with CAC technology. CAC id was not collected after the mission, and DD retained it as her military id. DD subsequently lost CAC during CTLT last summer. She can't get a replacement CAC because she is not on active duty orders. Because she has no CAC, she can't get to her Army email. Tech support so far has been unable to help with the email issue. Moral of the story is... if you get a CAC as a cadet, don't lose it!

Year group is the year you commission, so if you are a high school senior, I'd suspect that you'd graduate/commission in 2018. Component - if you are awarded a high school scholarship, you would be part of the US Army Reserve (Cadet Command falls under the US Army Reserve control group).

Unit type: I'm not even sure what those mean. Current post ... I'd say just list the state your program is in.

Just out of curiosity, was the lost CAC card reported to the appropriate people? They're sensitive items, so losing one is a big big no no, and as of last month the defense department is ramping up enforcing their policy on having a CAC card replaced.

On a separate note, you can get a CAC card when you are within 45 days of your orders start date. Don't wait until you report for BOLC or whatnot. They usually don't expire for cadets right after they return for CULP, etc. I've had mine for over a year now and will be getting a new one soon since it will expire in the next few months.

Jcc, saying CAC card as opposed to just CAC may be redundant, but it is pretty common way to refer to it. That or just ID card.

(Cadet Command falls under the US Army Reserve control group).

I know what you mean, but just for clarification, Cadet Command falls under TRADOC not the Army Reserve. It's an active duty organization. Contracted cadets are "assigned" to the USAR Control Group (ROTC). Simple semantics, and I know what you meant, but just to clarify.

You can get a CAC when you're 45 days out from BOLC? I've been clinging to my old one like gem encrusted gold for fear of losing it. If you're right, Bull, I may just go get a new one and update my DEERS while I'm at it.

Every time I've gone to get a new CAC card, I always could as long as I was within that 45 day window. Now, I guess I should have clarified and said it really depends on your orders, but usually (everyone I know) has been able to once they hit 45 days out. I would check to see if you can, but I bet you will. I sent you a PM.

My understanding is that DD reported the lost CAC card while still at CTLT. However when she went with cadre and some new cadets to get military ids in the fall, the issuing station said her CAC was not marked lost in the system. Supposedly they marked it lost at that time.

It is looking like there is a strong possibility that DD will be a Gold Bar recruiter for her battalion this summer - among other things, she is excited because that means she will get active duty orders and a CAC sooner.

This is only if you are Reserve/NG. If you are active duty you will have to wait until you arrive at your BOLC to get a CAC. I know some people will chime in that they got one before BOLC, so it is possible to slip through the cracks, but the official policy is you have to wait until the first day of BOLC. The reason for this is you only get a CAC if you are 1) on active duty or 2) drilling with a reserve/NG unit. Since reserve/NG start drilling the day they graduate they can go get it then, however AD are put into the IRR (individual ready reserves) until the day you start BOLC which is your official first day of AD. They actually have to put you into the AD system when you arrive at BOLC. Also it take awhile to get in the system, for me it took a week from the day I arrived at BOLC till I was told I was in the system and could go get a card (other BOLCs they might start this paperwork before you arrive so it might not have taken as long). For CULP they get ID cards because they are put on active duty orders for that trip (reason 2). I know that was a long answer but I though it might clarify when/why people get CACs.

All of my friends that have left for BOLC as AD officers all got their ID cards at least a few days before leaving for BOLC or the day before they left, some a month before. They are AD as soon as their orders start, which is not the same day as their first day of BOLC. I guess it depends on the card office you go to and if they can pull you into DEERS, but with orders in hand and a start date, you should be good.
